Constellation: Bartender Approved

"Hint" is Shanghai's latest and most practical expat magazine. It can be picked up at restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs, hotels, spas, schools and real estate agencies across Shanghai.

It's a lofty claim, but many people swear by the relatively unknown bar Constellation located at 86 Xinle Road near Xiangyang Road. From posts on internet boards to Shanghai social butterflies, and some of the bigger named bar tenders in town, Constellation seems to garner some pretty high praise. The award winning head bartender of Bar JG Markus Bernthaler claims Constellation as his favorite spot to hang out and get a few drinks after work.

Markus has been going to Constellation for around one year and said he "likes the quiet atmosphere," that "it's relaxed," and that the "Drinks are really well done." We can't disagree there. Hint visited Constellation and sampled a very tasty Dry Martini, stirred not Shaken (sorry 007). Their selection of unique cocktails is impressive and not overpriced when compared to places like Glamour Bar. But even more impressive is the wide range of different liquors lining the bar. From what we saw, we're reasonably positive that if you want some kind of special concoction Constellation's bartenders will be able to make it.

Constellation has a comfortable and cozy old school type atmosphere. There are gaudy, wooden chairs with black leather upholstery, low level lighting and a backlit bar showcasing the booze. In this small space there were 3 bartenders preparing for the evening which lead us to believe Constellation can get busy, but they still provide enough staff to keep customers satisfied.
