Degrees of Britishness here in Shanghai!
It’s enrolment time – and students are settling into new routines on undergraduate programmes all over the world. Choosing the right place for each individual is always a tough decision especially if the familiy or individual is located overseas.
Making the right choice here in Shanghai is now even easier, as for the first time students can choose a full UK accredited undergraduate degree programme – taught entirely in English at the Sino-British College. Based in the historic heart of the city on Fuxing Lu, SBC is a partnership between the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) and the Northern Consortium of UK universities (NCUK). The beauty of the relationship is the ties between SBC in Shanghai and its nine university partners in the UK. Through these links, SBC students have the option to take the entire programme in Shanghai, or to study at one of the partner universities in the UK for up to 2 years. Despite the reported reductions in Chinese students applying to Shanghai universities this year, SBC has just enrolled over six hundred new Chinese students and has also enrolled its first international students.
The SBC aim is to produce knowledgable graduates with strong degrees and an international outlook. A good example of how this works in practice is the partnership between SBC and Leeds Metropolitan University. After 3 years in the dynamic environment of Shanghai, a final study year in Leeds gives accounting and finance students a chance to receive amongst the highest level of transferable credits towards professional accounting qualifications such as the ACCA designation. The practical focus of qualifications is key to SBC’s aim of producing modern graduates ready to meet global employment demands.
Students on SBC’s Events Management Honours Degree programme, run in partnership with Huddersfield University, will also have unique work experience opportunites. Next year they’ll be principal volunteers at the UK Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo, gaining in-depth experience at a global event. They are currently involved in the translation preparation for the Shanghai Print Museum’s English language guides for Expo. Programme Manager Dr. Fleur Fallon stresses the importance of combining hands on experience with high academic standards to produce world class graduates: “Our students will develop high level technical knowledge as well as passion and a “can do” attitude, giving them a competive edge in the job market”.
Shanghai is at the heart of China's dynamic economic growth. In both finance and industry the opportunities are immense. Robotics, nanotechnology and space exploration are some of the key areas for the next generation of Engineers. Students on SBC's Engineering degrees get the chance to see world record breaking projects under construction like the 19km bridge and tunnel linking the mainland to Chongming Island. Experience in China, combined with the rigorous academic programme and top ranking research of degree partner Liverpool John Moores University, will make SBC students part of an engineering elite, ready to design and build for the future.
Professor Ian Gow (OBE) was recently appointed as Principal of SBC and he has a clear vision for the University. “We are going to produce a very special generation of graduates who can act as ambassadors for Sino-Foreign relations. They will help ensure China better understands the world, and the rest of the world better understands China”.
Ian has a proven track record in International Education as the founding Provost/CEO of the University of Nottingham Ningbo. Since his arrival at SBC this Spring, he has already used this experience to make significant changes, including:
- Recruitment of even more highly qualified academic staff.
- Higher standards of academic achievement set for admission requirements.
- A major physical investment programme on campus with particular focus on IT facilities.
- Full UK accredited undergraduate degrees available in Accounting and Finance, Business, Events Management, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
Professor Gow is in advanced discussions for new full degree programmes for 2010 with other NCUK partners to be announced shortly. He is also negotiating an expanded portfolio of 2+2 pathways (or 1+ 2 if international students are qualified to enter SBC year 2) to NCUK partner universities. He stated “It is vitally important that we provide as international a campus environment as possible and for that reason we are particularly keen to recruit in Shanghai and throughout China, regionally and globally. We are totally committed to enrolling well qualified, internationally-minded school leavers and mature students into this innovative British higher education initiative located in Shanghai, one of the most exciting and dynamic cities in the world.”

NOTES:
In 2003 the Chinese government enacted new legislation to allow the establishment of educational partnerships with overseas universities. The aim was to encourage foreign institutions to come to China to teach full degrees, and offer an alternative to Chinese Students who had previously gone abroad to study. The Sino-British College is one of just three British Universities to obtain this license from the Chinese government to issue undergraduate degrees. SBC is a partnership between The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) and nine member universities of the UK Northern Consortium (NCUK): The University of Bradford, The University of Huddersfield, The University of Leeds, Liverpool John Moores University, Leeds Metropolitan University, The Manchester Metropolitan University, The University of Salford, The University of Sheffield, and Sheffield Hallam University.
