FAQ - What can my spouse do for work in Shanghai?

Alex C-G

What can my spouse do for work in Shanghai?

Of course, this depends what you're good at. At the moment (as always) there's a lot of demand for English teachers in Shanghai, though you'll need a Bachelor's degree and a teaching certification (such as CELTA for the cushier jobs. Pay is usually around 120-160 RMB per hour. You can find lots of jobs on Dave's ESL Cafe and Tefl.com as well as the classifieds section of this site.

Other than that, it's up to you and how much time, capital, energy and motivation you have. Forget service, catering, administrative or technical jobs though...those are handled by the locals at a fraction of the price a Westerner could cope with. For a good selection of jobs, try checking out some of the websites mentioned in our article on finding skilled help in Shanghai
