FAQ - Electricity in Shanghai

Michael (Revised by Alex C-G)

What voltage is used in Shanghai? Is it possible to buy adaptors?

The voltage in China is 220V and you'll find a mixture of American-style two-pronged sockets and Chinese-style three-pronged ones (the same type as in New Zealand). Step-down voltage converters are easy to buy if you're bringing things over that require 110V. Look on Xiangyang Rd near Fuxing Rd.

Check the power on your computer, printer and monitor (and scanner, speakers, external modems... anything that has a plug). If it is fairly current and a good brand, chances are it can take 220V power just by using an adapter. If it doesn't, sell it and buy one that can handle 220V before you leave. Don't wait until you come to China, computers are surprisingly expensive here. Leave, sell or give away any small appliances that can't handle 220V or which don't have an external adapter.
