could someone please confirm -
if I buy a "3G HK iphone" here in Shanghai - this means it should be 100% unlocked, and no problem when I register it with apple or whatever? when apple issues new software releases, I won't have to deal with any of the hack nonsense? and I don't need to ask experts to download special software or anything? |

You can check the model number of the phone against the unlock table at the Apple site now.
Look down the table, and check that the model number corresponds to a phone MISSING the check in locked to carrier field.
Suggest print this page out, and check to see if the phone is from an unlocked region -
Traditionally HK and Italy are the two, but now there are a handful more unlocked ones. I'd still stick to the "traditional" two, as those are less likely to have issues.

You can find the model number in Settings / General / About on the phone.
If it isn't an unlocked region, and they're purporting that it is an unlocked phone, find a different vendor that isn't lying to you. Be especially careful in HK - I've had a few clients come back with US phones that had internal simcard hacks soldered in. We had open the phone and remove the sim card hack in one case. |

thanks for the warning on the model numbers
for that link, it says iphone 3g is activated at place of purchase. so that means if the model number is good for not locked to carrier places, then they should have opened them and activated them in those locations before they shipped them to shanghai for them to work? and then when I get it, I register it on itunes when I get home? |

If it is the same as mine, which is an unlocked one bought from Hong Kong, you will need to connect to itunes to activate it. It took me a frustrating 10 minutes before I realised I had to do that. Then again I could have just read the instructions. |

Means you only want to buy one from a country that sells factory unlocked phones - eg Italy, HK...
You don't need to connect to iTunes to activate typically, usually the phone will do this once you throw a sim card in. That said there were issues when the Apple Store was inaccessible (as things get in China), and you couldn't activate or do firmware upgrades without jumping through hoops.
No issues to activate or upgrade legitimate factory unlocked ones. That said, I usually hack them anyway, as there are some things in Cydia people want, eg the Video Recorder. |

You're far more familiar with iphones than I will ever be. However here is the one that I have:

Don't know if this helps, but my friends have gotten iphones by finding other friends in the US who are eligible for the iphone upgrade ($150-250USD). I'm guessing their friends have to recommit to another contract, but they were going to do that anyways. So they paid for the upgrade and either got their friend's old iphone or the new one. You would still have to get it unlocked and/or jailbroken, I think. |
