We WANT YOUR Ideas and Suggestions for ShanghaiExpat
Hi All
We are in the process right now of deciding what to do with the next version of the Shanghaiexpat website. We want to get your feedback and ideas on how to make the site better, more useful, easier to navigate, or anything else that would help us help you to have a better experience.
We have a long list already and realize there are quite a few issues we need to fix. Now is the time to add your observations to the list.
We cannot guarantee we will use your suggestion or idea, but we welcome them. We want to know what is important to you. Some things require resources we may not have. Some thing might be really easy to implement and make a big difference, so go ahead. Give us your thoughts.
You can post here or you can PM or email me. |

How about a dedicated DOG forum? The cat forum is full of dog posts which is acknowledged oddly enough... |

Can you make it a more customizable portal with some personalization? I spend a lot of time on the site so it would be great if I could also check my emails here quickly by checking a portlet or widet to the side. Or check an RSS feed for my notifications. Probably too much to ask but you guys are really onto something here I hope you have the funds to develop this site and keep it running. |

- Make the search function easier to navigate.
- It would be good to have the forum section a bit more readable. It is a bit messy with forum topics everywhere.
- Archive posts that were made in 2001. A bit outdated info that no one probably really cares about anymore.
- I like the 'Last Forum Posts' that shows on the homepage. It quickly shows if there has been any updates.
That's it for now... |

Stop the tabs on the home page from automatically changing after a period of time (whatever the technical term is). |

I would think that a section specifically dedicated to the How To's or where to get things section would be helpful, and if there is a way to rate the usefulness of the contribution. |

Establish an IQ test for new registrants so we don't have to deal with the Blew Mark's, Nutalie's and Orphee's et. al. |

Impractical anyway, they just come back with new IDs, plus one can route through different servers to fool the mods.
Would you get rid of the automatic cut-off on searching too many post histories? Sometimes I need to check in order to out-troll the trolls. |

So what does 100 posts prove?
*Here we go right off the topic... |

Maybe a special private forum where only actual expats can post? Perhaps verification would require showing up at a mixer? |

For me, latest posts is the most useful feature. #1: Make it easy to find the Latest Posts page instead of having to go Home every time, and extend the amount of posts considered "latest". Something like show (a) last 4 hours (b) last day (c) last 3 days (d) last week...or just a simple page 1, page 2, etc. #2 In the forum list, have a collapsible +/- menu that you can show (or hide) the latest posts in any particular forum without having to actually go to that forum. Basically, after being away for more than 12 hours make it easier to see what's been going on.
Some forums I've been on, when you try to start a new topic you have to enter the topic name and hit an enter button. Then it does a search automatically and gives you relevant matches. It gives you the option to continue posting a new topic if you want, but by forcing people to do a search first I believe it can eliminate a lot of redundancy. It doesn't add much inconvenience, just another click. Could make it a user option (default "on" when you first sign up) if it really pisses people off.

I assume you're joking. If not I will say that I guess over half the people join so they can ask a question with their first post. |

They are not all really Nuthalie, but someone pretending to be Nuthalie. You know, trolls? It will not stop. Sometimes I feel sorry for the mods. If anything, they are deleting too much stuff recently. If more people knew about the trolls, the forums would become more self-regulating and the mods' jobs would get easier. |

Michael,
your site on 1st-2nd page of google's results with searching for Shanghai... So need to thinking well about how to convert the traffic to CASH. What these people want from "Shanghai" ? Buy or sell, travel.. etc ? Give it him. And after both of years - sell the site for some million dollars and go to Hawaii for grow old years |

This has to be one of the stupidest ideas ever posted on an internet forum. Who are you and what have you done with Snapster? |

A larger number of latest forum posts showing up on the home page, since thats what most everyone here is interested in. Remove the rotating tab functionality its annoying as I always click on the latest foum posts anyway, like most I would imagine.
If its not too resource heavy a more basic text editor with wysiwyg?
Remove advertising from the heavy graphic variety to text based, like google ads. They get more click thru's I'm sure. Your long ad format is something from the past.
The idea of a specialists area where you can perhaps a more fruitful conversation is good. Requirments could be that you register for it as a specialist, fill in a more detailed form? list your area of expertize, maybe have those postings come up before general forum ones from a search? |

An amazingly detailed section about how it all works with visas and/or links to residence permit sites could seriously cut down the amount of threads on the "visa topic" as there is always someone with a different question and then there are 100 different answers...
+ a DOG FORUM! |
