| Post subject: Blue Expat Insurance/Blue Cross |
For the last 2.5 years, I have had William Russell insurance but am unhappy with their coverage. I am considering a switch to Blue Expat through [Blue Cross. Has anyone used this? How is the coverage and response time?[/b] |

Read my previous posts on health insurance in Asia and read very carefully what Blue Expat is going to offer and who their medical assistance company is affiliated to here in Asia in case you require medical evacuation. Good insurance is not worth the paper it is written on if you don't have someone to get you to a good center for treatment if and when necessary.
I have not had any experience with Blue Expat per se, but can tell you that working with Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Asia sometimes can be a nightmare, particularly to get approvals and guarantees to pay medical expenses for urgent cases.
As you know healthcare here isn't cheap and you may have to fork out of your own pocket if they don't do direct guarantees with the healthcare provider. No-one is going to treat you without money upfront!
One of my clients here on a business trip insured by an American HMO wanted to see a doctor at one of the international clinics here last week and they wanted a RMB 1 000 upfront before they would even take a look at him.
In summary, read the fine print, make sure they cover EXPENSIVE evacuation (and they have someone who can do it - tough in China to find a good service that does that apart from one company that I know of) to nearest center of medical excellence and repatriation back to home if necessary, and that you have sufficient inpatient coverage for any catastrophic event. |
