Not cold in winter? What's that in the bottom middle picture? Snow? Or industrial fallout?

Here an opinion about Dalian vs Qingdao. Both are good, just some small difference.

Just bought a house there. It is great in the summer, good seafood and snow is not nearly as bad as some other areas.
Nice beaches also, but more for local tourists than foriegners.

Dalian is nice place, but compared with Qingdao, colder for 10C and winds faster for 10 m/c Wink

Lived there for 6 years, 2002 to 2008.

Winters can be chilly, lowest generally -5 degrees maybe dropping a few more with wind chill as Dalian is on peninsula. But remember, homes have heating so very cozy inside.

Summers usually 5 months long, temp in high 20's to low 30's, dry heat, no humidity.

A fabulous city in summer, spring & fall/autumn. In winter, the city hibernates a little and everyone waits for Spring.

Locals are friendly, 'small' expat population of about 5,000 but fairly tight-knit and welcoming. Great food, nightlife nothing like Shanghai but very easy to find cool places to hangout (Draft beer is half the price or more of Shanghai!)

I have very fond memories of Dalian and would recommend it for people who are looking for a great 2nd tier city to live in. So much that I bought a place there even after moving to Shanghai - I still plan on spending quite a bit of time up there hanging out with old friends. Those beautiful summers (away from the Shanghai humidity), fabulous golf courses (7 courses when I lived there), cheap cold beer, great seafood & tall leggy girls make Dalian a cool place to hang out.

For those that love Shanghai for its cosmopolitan feel, varied restaurants & nightlife, Dalian may not be the place for them. Just depends on what you want ...
