Timmy is from Dorchester. A small town in Dorset.
He's a country bumpkin. |

Why do so many English towns have 'chester' in thier names?
In the US we have something called 'Chester the molester' but we'd never name a town after that. |

Yawn...Just another bitaching thread.
Ok, face it. Who cares whether it's international? I am from Shanghai and currently living outside China. I don't go around here bragging how great Shanghai is. To a lot of pepole who are from this city, it's simply their home with friends and family. Meanwhile I don't put down the place where I am living. If I don't like this place, simply because I can't find the lifestyle I enjoy here. I don't know what makes you so bitter, but certainly it may have something to do with your personality, not where you are.
Now, are you all ready to throw some snowballs at me? |
Bitter is not the word I would use, looking behind the smoke and mirrors is more how I would describe this.
I would of course expect a comment such as yours because you are Chinese, no snowballs needed.
China goes to extreme lengths ($43 billion) to prove it is now sophisticated cultured and international, ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with the global community. Yet some restaurants and bars and all of Shanghai's flash and glamour does not make it nternational in the eyes of an international community - only to Chinese is Shanghai international. |

| The internationalizing of a city doesn't come through access to ethnic restaurants, nor does it come with the age of a place. To be truly global requires a sustained and coordinated effort on the part of local government, businesses and places of higher education. Individuals, diverse communities and a sincere support for the arts round out the endeavor. |
So, therefore, no. |

The degree of how international a city is could define it by at least the following dimensions:
1. Number of international residents and travellers
2. Number of operating international companies/organization
3. International reputation/influence
4. Width and depth of commuication and interactions with different parts of the world
5. Suitability for people around the world to live/work
6. Uniqueness
If we look at Shanghai Now and Shanghai Ten Years Ago, it would not be difficult to see the improvement in 1-5. However, if we compare Shanghai with Hongkong and Singapore etc., there is a long way to go.
Surey Shanghai would not be paradise for anyone. If one has stomach disorder here in Shanghai, the best one could do is go to back home. Prolonged stay will only end up with worsened stomachache (don't know if it leads further to mental disorder). |

Good point! I'll put the emphasis on point 4 to 6. I just want to laugh when people talking about the internationalization of Shanghai, goddammit, they take the city hall propaganda stuff for real! |

UK trailer trash speak is the best - well at least the part I understand. Too bad Google translate doesn't work on the rest. |

I'd rather live in Colchester, VT compared to Beefhide, KY... |

You know some Chinese call Shanghai a cultural waste dump trying to westernize itself. So if SH ain't national or international then what is it then? |

To be honest, Shanghai reminds in many respects of London in the early 70's. |
