Thanks last night to Justbeers.cn for sponsoring 3 cases of giveaways for the guests. Despite a mis-communication with the management at Malones who did not get the VB's cold prior to the event as promised, Mat came through with three cases to three members, all very happy get free beer delivered to their home or office!

A big belated THANK YOU to Shangthai Expat and Mat at JUST BEER for the two cases of VB I won at Shanghai Expat Mixer. Am loving every sip of my home town amber fluid.

"Happy little Vegemite."

Will be there with a couple of my friends.

So do I just show up with my friends or need to register somewhere. The first page does not say anything.

Was there yesterday after half year maybe, and that was enough for another half year - knew nobody there except Blueocean, they had only one (later two) waitress for like 150 people and they seems to be pissed anytime someone ordered something. And their food sucks dog dick. I had fish and chips, they brought me fish with fries, GF had steak, also ate only a little of that (they claim Australian steak, curiously it tasted like Chinese) .

WHY NOT MOVE THESE WEDNESDAY TO BULLDOG ? They have also 3rd floor for parties, they have great selection of draught beers and delicious food (European and American) and happy smiling waitresses. I would come every week if it were at Bulldog.

Almost forgot the ground floor brothel at Malones through which one must go through, ugly old full of STD hookers...ewwww....

I do agree with a few things you say,
The workers I dealt with on the 3rd floor weren't the normally cheery workers you find at restaurants here.
The worst thing for me was the beer price, do we pay normal beer price or is it discounted? It seems over priced.

Interesting comments. I get steak about twice a month there and usually its pretty decent. Cant comment on fish and chips though as i never ordered it....hmmm, probably the only thing.
Malones has been a long time sponsor and supporter of the ShanghaiExpat community and has been quite good to us over the years providing the space, finger foods and 25rmb drinks to us for teh mixers for the past few years. But maybe we can review the venue to consider a change if someone else has a better offer. but for now it will likely not change.

Beer price for standard beers is 25 rmb during the 9-12 period. There are exceptions and the waitresses should tell you if you order Guiness, Heineken in a bottle and Erdinger and such.

^Talk with Bulldog people, I believe they could match it. Kegged Tiger draught used to cost 8RMB per half liter back in 2000, I believe it did not change much since then, so everyone can offer 25RMB beer and still have nice profit - back in 2000 I was selling it for 18RMB...

For imported beers Bulldog has buy-1-get-1 all night (some really expensive beers buy-1-get-half) still they have best price even for the best beers.

Well I am yet again a happy little vegemite because for the 3rd time I have won a prize at the Mixer and I only put in one card in.

I guess I am easily pleased and thrilled the hookers haven't made it to the 3rd flr. If they ever do you won't see me for dust. Guaranted.

Thanks again Shanghai Expat.

Adrienne

Having been to both Malones and the Bulldog over the years....

Would have to say that:
- Malone's has done a great job of supporting the ex-pat community for many years.
- The venue is central to many...Bulldog is NOT convenient for anyone living in central Puxi
- The waitresses have always been pleasant while I was there.
- Have had several bad waitress experiences at the Bulldog.
Been to the 3rd florr on at the Bullgog....about half the size...

Vote: Malone's.

Reggin.....did you order food from the menu on the 3rd floor?

The Mixer is set up for drinks and the finger food supplied....and staffed for that.
If you order menu food or mixed drinks that they have to go downstairs for....I would not expect great service...
They do not have enough staff on for those...

PS...Yu. Maybe they like me, but I was always getting Heineken bottlrs for 25rmb.

So you saying BECAUSE I ordered food on 3rd floor they intentionally made the food badly ? What logic is that...?

Quote:

There were like 100 people and ONE waitress, one guy behind bar and one guy clicking on screen. Later came 2nd waitress.

Draught is for 50 not bottles

But is VERY convenient for anyone living in: Pudong, Xujiahui, Hengshan rd area, Huaihai Rd area, Xintiandi area, Zhaojiabang Rd area, Taikang rd area etcetera etcetera

I was there last Wednesday, first in two years, and maybe I arrived late but if the few hours is an indication of what it is like then maybe some tweaking needs done. I'm not saying move it from Malones as I feel that after five years there the event rather than the venue seemed jaded.

As a sidenote, the mixer was introduced as a way of getting together with people more interested in socialising in a bar environment rather than the sobriety of Starbucks at the weekend. Maybe with it being more networking orientated there is less consumption of alcohol and Malones are not seeing it as the financially fruitful event it was before.

It is wednesday again and so the mixer is tonight. The expat population has dropped a bit so it may have had some impact on the attendance but then again I will be looking into the Malones issues if its the last thing i do. Will especially see whats up with the wait staff on our floor as there have been many newbies working it as of late. No excuse for the food though as its been mostly decent for me over the past 6 years so i can over look the bad attempt at jambalaya last month that clearly was a cajun flavored indonesian-fried rice. It happens, I just dont order it again.

Anyhow, mixer tonight at malones.

Decent, time at Malone's last night. Had the Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice) which I would not recommend - does not come close to the real thing.

Not as many people as last week but still good.
