Post subject: going to Cambodia... unlocking SIM card?

so yeah, meeting a friend in Cambodia. she's in HK right now, and claims she had her SIM card unlocked so that she can use it all over asia, but not korea (different network, or something). told me to do the same. was wondering if anyone has had any experience with doing such? simple as taking my phone into a China Mobile retailer? i dont wanna get ripped off, so any idea what i'm looking at in terms of costs/fees? last thing i wanna hear is "you must buy new SIM card" or something.

China Mobile need to allow International Roaming. If it's a prepay phone you may need to pay a deposit. A China Mobile office will sort it out for you.

Costs to make calls and receive calls is very high when roaming. Also charges to receive SMS so be careful!

I'm not an expert, but I don't think you unlock sim cards, I think you unlock phones. If you bought a phone here in China, you could bring it with you and just buy a prepaid sim card when you get to Cambo and switch them out. No unlocking necessary. This is probably much simpler than anything else you might have had planned.

I did this just three weeks ago in Siem Reap. Actually, my friend there already had a sim card, I just had to put some minutes on it. Only two dollars worth! But I think buying a simcard would be just as simple. You can do that anywhere on the street here in China, and it looked like a similar set up over there.

Siem Reap was great by the way. Didn't want to go to Phnom.

yeah, i was under the same impression, ajgreene. but apparently, she somehow got her stuff "unlocked" and is able to use her phone all over asia without changing sim cards at every country (she's been to thailand, philippines, taiwan, couple other places)--just not korea.

we're arriving into Phnom and making our way to Siem Reap. any recommendations while we're there?
