| Post subject: ORGANIC food |
Dear All,
I would like to buy organic food:
fresh organic eggs
fresh organic vegetables (carrots, potatoes, salad, broccoli, onions)
fresh organic meat
fresh organic milk (also goat milk)
Does anybody know a certified farm with high quality products?
I am Italian and I cook a lot at home.
When in Italy I use to buy things directly from the farmers so I have some experience in recognising quality.

you can get organic food at Carrefour and City
(Although the photo of the farm on the package of organic eggs doesn't exactly look like an organic farm ....) |

I am very suspicious with the organic food of Carrefour. If I compare the content of the packages of the organic food with the content of the packages of the non-organic food it seems to me to be really the same... The eggplants are far too nice to be organic... Well, here I would need some explanations about what is to be considered organic in China... does somebody know? |

Yes, I know what you mean.
Did you ever buy the so called organic eggs? The picture of the chicken farm doesn't exactly looks like what (to my understanding) an organic farm should look like.
After reading the description of the farm, I came to the conclusion that "organic" in this case means that the chicken are not fed with meat-and-bone meal or something like that. (I bet it's a laying battery too) |

Thanks for the links and also for the summary of the translation of the eggs package  My Chinese is not that good yet.
I have now a couple of addresses of farms in Shanghai (surroundings) that I am going to visit in the next couple of weeks (now I am busy with some exams). I will then post a comment in this thread.

have you already been to Metro?
At Metro you can buy good parmigiano reggiano (puoi comperare anche una forma) and the pasta De Cecco. Also the meat is good, but I couldn't found out if they can get also organic one (I need to go there with my Chinese teacher).
Good coffee you can buy at Celestine Coffee (there is one small shop in the Shopping center Cloud Nine in Zhong Shan Gong Yuan, underground, next to McDonald). They have different type, such as for espresso, mokka... they have arabica, bolivia high mountain... buonissimo.
Good Australian meat (and it is very good) you can buy by Elders. You can get also Tasmanian meat (ho fatto un roastbeef all'inglese favoloso).
Regarding organic products I will let you know as soon as I know something.

Hi Medea, if you rush in front of McDonald you won't see it. You have to pass the shopping mall threshold. On your left you will have China Mobile and in the middle the small shop. They have also a good selection of Italian coffee machines (the Bialetti). |

I am also passing the McDonalds under Cloud Nine every day, and one day happened to discover Celestine Coffee. Actually I still have the flyer with price lists, it seems very good indeed. Different types of coffee from varying countries, and coffee makers as well. Planned to buy a small normal coffee maker for 109RMB. I recommend to check out that shop, it was a pleasant surprise. Didnīt help me in my effort to reduce my coffee drinking though...

Hi Medea, regarding the prices, they will go from 45 RMB to 100 RMB for 225 gr. I usually buy Arabica, Espresso, Mocha and the Celestine Brand. They all costs between 45 and 55. At the Celestine you can also buy a mill which is indispensable if you want to have the full aroma and make the coffee drinking a more complete experience (and can also contribute to limit the quantity of coffee  . I brought a coffee mill with me, however I've never used it before. (Brought grounded espresso from home)
I'm using an espresso maker like this.
Do I have to use a special "espresso mill" or does it work with a simple coffee mill? |

Your equipment is fine I think that this Krup model does not have a mill... If it doesn't than you have to use grounded coffee.
As Italian I have a pretty traditional equipment (the bialetti and a manual mill, as my grandmother had at home). The advantage of having a small Bialetti is that you can bring it anywhere you go. You just need to ask in the hotel or somebody "sorry, may I use your kitchen for a couple of minutes...". I remember that this was very useful in the center of Australia, where they do not know what coffee is, except for Nescafe'... Hope this helps |

Do you drink your coffee black when making it with the bialetti? I tried to drink it once (without milk) and I nearly got a heart attack  too strong. |

Hi Medea,
indeed, sometimes the coffee made with an espresso coffee machine is a bit strong (and I must admit, sometimes I also get some heart beating or stomach problems due to the concentration of coffeine). With the bialetti I hardly have this problem. The "caffe'" is milder but this doesn't mean that you cannot taste the taste of coffee. I usually drink an espresso when I need to wake up. I drink the bialetti-coffee to enjoy the taste of coffee, and I can drink it also black. |

By the way, I found Celestine coffee. I didn't have your directions with me so I passed the counter twice before I saw it
Oh, Mandrich, do you happen to know if I can freeze parmesan cheese?
I brought several pieces of parmesan with me but I'm not sure whether I can freeze it as a whole (like I do it with pecorino ) or do I have to grate it before freezing? |

If you can freeze parmesan... Yes.
Whole or grated... it depends from the quality of parmesan. Hi quality parmesan maintain his consistency also after unfreezing. If you are not sure about the quality grate and vacuum-pack it before freezing.
Which is the name of the name of the parmesan producer...?

I just go on posting into even though I have seen that there is a special forum for food suggestions.
I have found a small shop with some good Italian products next to Changle Lu (100 meter away from the Italian Consulate office).
there you can find:
- pasta de Cecco (different shapes)
- capperi (capers, in vinegar and in salt! which you can use to cook dishes)
- different types of salami (mortadella, unfortunately already packed)
- pomodori organici "cuor di leone" (which are good for salad)
- different types of marmelade (from South Tyrol and Austria)
- olive oil (different types)
- balsamico
...

i'm not trying to advertise... but my mom has an organic farm in pudong...
we are not selling to supermarkets cuz mom thinks the organic food in carrefour are all fake... well... i dunno... i've been eating mom's organic veggies for years now and i love it...
if u are interested, u can gather a group and i can do a farm tour... something i've done in the past for some other expat ladies |
