Hi fellow Filipinos,

New here... Ask lang po ng advise. Our company will opened a new manufacturing plant in shanghai. He ask me if I want to work in china.. Wala pa naman formal offer na binibigay pero sabi nya mas malaki daw kesa sa salary ko dito sa Pinas + free housing & free meal during office hours. i work here in the phils as sales executive. I earned basic salary + commission. Pero pagdating sa China i will work in the offce as sales coordinator. Wala po ako idea if how much is the average salary for an expat in my category. please help naman po para maka decide ako kng tatangapin ko ang offer. or how much salary ang hihingiin ko sa boss ko.

It would be hard to give an "amount". The salary in Shanghai is so broad as it depends on a lot of factors. A sales coordinator cane earn from $600 USD to $5,000 USD depending on your nationalityand the type of company you work with.

Suggest you go for no less than 2.5 times what you are getting in Manila, and ask for them to take care of your China taxes. Since you will be tax free being an OFW, this will translate to around 3X what you get from Manila which is a good start up salary. If possible ask that your salary be in RMB not in USD, since USD keeps on depreciating against the RMB. Good luck

@ Juan_Tamad,

Thanks for the info..as of now i'm earning 10K basic salary and average of 80K to 120K annual commision since i'm into sales. but if i will work in shanghai as office staff/sales coordinator i will no longer get commision only my salary packages which includes free housing and free lunch sa office. I'm thinking of asking 4,000RMB to 5,000RMB. is that too low or too high? since i dont have idea on how much is the cost of leaving in shanghai plus the fact the
at filipino families of OFW expects high remittance. How much do I need to ask to leave a simple but comfortable life in shanghai plus makapagpadala ako sa family ko atleast 15K - 20K pesos per month.

You said free housing and free meal during working hours.
How about your flights home?
Honestly, 4K to 5K a month is a local salary.

If you plan to send 20K PHP a month, thats around 3K RMB a month which does not leave you much.
If you get 5K RMB a month, leaves you 2K RMB a month.
Assume you spend 40 rmb a day for food and transportation (which is what you will spend, maybe more), thats 1200 a month, which leaves you with 800 a month.
Shanghai is an expensive city, 800 a month will not bring you far, but if you are not into nightlife...its ok.

Hi,

Maki sabat lang... how much work experience (with the company, and others) do you have? I tell you, if you are being asked/offered to work here in SH from Manila, don't settle for less than 7K RMB (plus housing) - that is for entry level (1-3 yrs work exp).

As JT said, depende sa company (size, industry, etc) ang dapat na expect mo. Frankly speaking, 4-5K RMB a month is like for some first time English [asst] teachers (pinoy), at maybe some small school or language center, or some BPO/call center job here, aside from being the average local salary.

Also, I think you should factor in the "loneliness" of being far from home when you negotiate the salary. Dapat compensated ka rin from leaving your so-called comfort zone. Don't just convert the +/- 200k PHP a year you are currently getting to RMB because that will lead you to only about 3K RMB a month. Siyempre, you'd want to save up for yourself din.

I had a chat with someone here who was brought to SH from MLA. I'm not sure how much he was earning, but I reckon, based on what he has told me he was expecting from a new job, it was less than 10K RMB. Honestly, for sales here, unless you can speak the language, you may not have much edge over the locals; however, if the position being offered is supervisory level, then you have some leverage.

Life in Shanghai is relatively cheap, that is, depende sa lifestyle mo, plus your responsibilities back home. And the higher value of money here compared to our PHP can be tempting. Taking a taxi to work everyday at 20RMB per trip translates to around 5K PHP a month already, but seems cheap and usual here. Dining at a mid-range fancy restaurant at 200-300RMB per head seems affordable, but is already around 1.5 to 2KPHP. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of cheaper options. I'm just saying that there's a difference in the spending attitude of most expats here. I speak for myself.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Alegna

Thanks guys for the info..at least may idea na ako on how much salary ang negotiate ko, by next week balik na boss ko from SH and I'm expecting that he will discuss his offer. Ang worry ko lng kasi is baka baratin ako kasi almost free lahat ng kailangan ko doon. ang staff house kasi namin is within the plant site so no expense for the transpo plus free narin ang plane ticket papunta roon. Company lahat magpaprocess ng papers ko. with yearly vacation free na rin ang plane ticket. Basically office work ang trabaho ko under sales dept. and pioneer employee ako sa SH if matutuloy.. mag oopen palang kasi sa october ang planta namin.Para kasing style ng Boss ko na unahin sabihin sa akin ang other benifits but yung salary naka hang pa. but I'm ok now kasi may idea na ako kahit papano on how much is the cost of leaving in SH. Thanks again.

Good Call, foreigners getting sick in shanghai...will cost you literally an arm and a leg if you dont have an insurance. Better go home if you get ill or injured. Make sure you have coverage.

Haisah, Good luck.
Shanghai is a great city to learn international business. Shanghai is a great fun city if you have the money.
Hope they offer you a reasonable offer to make your time worth living in Shanghai. Reminder to tell them to take care of your China taxes.
I know lots of filipinos working for 3,000-3500 RMB a month waiting tables. The money is not even enough to pay the debt they paid to come to Shanghai. They are sorry they even came here, buit at the same time they said they have nothing to do in Manila....

or you could ask penny lao if they can accept if you pack the bike separately. some forwarding co. doing b/b allows it.
