| Post subject: LAUNDRY!!!! |
hi, i just arrived in Shanghai not long ago, and work has been insane. I live alone in a service apartment and it would be insane for me to get an Ayi to do my laundry since she doesn't even need to clean my room.
Im wary of the laundry shops here cuz im just afraid that they may not be able to handle my clothes with care.
I guess there are many pple in Shanghai who come here to work and have troubles with laundry. I work all day and i really want to take a chill pill and entrust my clothes to someone else to handle.
You guys know if there is a good laundry service around? |

I think if you wait a few more minutes someone below will tell you where to go and provide a useful email address for it. I am a cynic (spelling)? |

Service apartment not providing laundry services? Doesn't add up. You might be right tom!
And if you are really looking for answers gigglepants, you need to provide your location as i am sure you won't be lugging your laundry all the way to a shop here in Minhang if i do suggest a good place. |

No, I am definitely a cynic, not a psychic.
Ask your serviced apartment where the local laundry place is. No doubt there will be one down the road and they will help. |

Check the sponsors on the "Discounts" tab at the top of the page. There is a laundry service called "Clothes Spa", with an ad and a coupon.
Can't vouch for them, but at least they pay for their ads. |

Actually I am desperately looking some laundry place which can also do MANGLE of bedding. Spammers welcome - seriously - had my top people on it (first 2 hours took explain what a MANGLE is), then they were searching and found nothing. So I asked them how they treat bedding at home - just wash, no mangling, even no ironing... |

If its drycleaning maybe Elephant King or Fornet. Could be pricey since you have to pay per piece and they don't do a bad job. Elephant king does delivery, Fornet I'm not sure but i think they do too.
If its handwash, i guess you have to hire an ayi to do that. |

I lived in a serviced apartment for a while- and yep, they don't do my laundry either- OP's right- it would be ridiculous to hire an ayi just for that one job.
I don't have the answers but I do think the question is genuine! |

You need a bit of luck to find a place that will actually launder your clothes without shrinking, bleaching, etc. I assume by your post you do not actually have your own washing machine. For business clothes, just take a walk around your neighborhood to find dry cleaner. I pay cny7 each for pants and shirts, and 22 for jacket. Much cheaper them what the Apt service offers. |

It's not ridiculous to hire an ayi for that at all.
Just tell her, look, do the laundry, that's it.
That's what I would do. Laundry services in Shanghai have astronomical prices. In Hong Kong they wash by weight, here they do it by the colour of your skin it seems. |

Oh no, no, no, no, no.... NO!
The correct assumption is you are telling a child to wash your clothes unless you are shown otherwise.
Therefore never ever tell any Ayi to "Just do the laundry" without first spelling out in great detail HOW the laundry is MEANT to be done. Other wise you could very well be looking at buying new clothes to replace the ruined ones.
Washing machines to many a Ayi are a relativity new invention including the washing powder as well as being completely unable to smell mildew.
I assume your serviced apartment is not an apartment at all - it is a hotel suite, correct? Other wise you would have a washing machine jammed in next to the toilet so you could do your own.
If you are really going insane about your laundry why not just go and buy a small washing machine for 500RMB and jam it in next to your toilet and do it it yourself?
(Typos and spelling) |

1. u can teach an ayi how to hand wash western clothes, it may be the cheapest option, assume u have a balcony for hanging them to day. have someone in your office help find u a good ayi.
2. dry cleaning shops are ok, and they usually have a big washing machine too, u just need to specify 'no hot water' or things will shrink like you never seen shrink before (especially some/many local made clothes, many are not made to be machined washed or dryed). But it is ridiculously expensive, more than in the USA! fricking bandits, all of 'em.
3. small/medium washers are not expensive, just make sure your apartment has the right power/outlet for it, and a place to connect water and drain to the washing machine. |

Our dry cleaning is done by a franchised operation FORNET.
Ask a friend to navigate the chinese part of the website
http://www.fornet.com.cn/a-c/fornet-md2.php?id=516
for the location nearest to you.
Another laundromat that do pickups is USA laundry (i think). They cost a lot more. |

That's a good one, so many things that happen's in China is base on where you are from and the color of your skin. |

We had this problem, too. Tried 3 dry cleaners (including Clothes Spa and Fornet) before settling on Elephant King. They do a great job. Just make sure you tell them not to bag your clothing or else your freshly ironed shirts will be folded into something resembling an accordian and shoved in a small plastic bag. Oh, business suits are also folded and bagged. Buy one of their "frequent flyer" cards. It's really a debit card and you are charged far less per piece than without the card. Elephant King will also pick up/deliver and there seems to be one everywhere I look. |

Hire an ayi is the best way I think... 25 rmb at most for 2 hours. She will wash your clothes, iron your clothes the next day. Just pay her 300 rmb a month and she comes for an hour on Monday and Tuesday then Thursday and Friday... Ironing alone pays my ayi by itself. When you figure she comes 3 times a week and irons at least 7 or 8 shirts and pants per week. I get the cleaning and cooking for free |
