I went there last Sunday afternoon.
It was crowded as hell !
Traffic jams ...
Made some pictures.
All, really all the 6 remaining buildings along the river lean over.
One of the bystanders told me that already Friday afternoon that building was clearly tilting.
There was a team of 4 engineers checking movements of the buildings with electronic theodolites, generating excel sheets and graphs on their laptop. Looking over their shoulder, I could see values of 22 mm. At the phone I could hear him saying that the biggest movement he measured that day was san shi san mm.
He refused to give me any exact value. "We will issue an official report, you will know everything at the press conference" he said.
Later, I tried to go inside the construction site to make some more nice photo's but the police catched me (after I was almost on the site) |

Question: why start excavating soil for the parking garage AFTER the building is finished, thus exposing the foundation?
I checked this with some people familiar in the industry and it seems the developer and the builder get paid according to the proportion of the building finished (measured in # of total storeys). Can anyone with industry knowledge confirm this? Sounds scary, but it would explain why building are shooting up so fast in heught and afterwards take years to complete. |

Rhetoric question, no surprises anymore here looking at housing or construction.
Funny is so many locals keep on asking why i don't buy a house here to live in. Standard answer: i don't buy crap or at least try to avoid it. And if i buy crap, it's cheap crap, not overpriced crap. |

Actually....if you look closely you can see where the bits of piling that stayed with the building broke off from the bit that is probably still in the ground.
What appears to be missing is the re-bar needed to keep the piling intact.
Still looks like an inadequate number of pilings....but might have kept if from toppling completely over |

I agree that Shanghai properties are rubbish. I can see loads of them being pulled down in 10 years or so. Compare that with Hong Kong where the Brits made sure the buildings stood the test of time.....and hurricanes. If Shanghai cannot build proper buildings on completely flat land, what can they build I wonder? |

There was a suggestion on China television, that the fallen apartments will be turned into car parking.

Local Shanghai govt officials are shareholders of the property developer Meidu - see link below. If the local govt officials who are supposed to supervised and approved the safety of the building are also the developer of the buildings guess how safe all other buildings are in Shanghai?

Did you look at the pictures of those buildings? One thing struck me as very interesting! The glass is mostly intact! So the moral of the story is, build the remainder of the buildings (or at least the foundations) completely out of glass  |

Did they start tearing it apart yet? Or did they decide just to put a chain and a crane to it and lift it back up?
Actually maybe they'll take it apart in sections, put them on trucks, drive to Guangdong and put them back up there... I'm thinking Shenzhen, Longhua now... |

They could just dig a big hole halfway to the middle, then send another Anhui worker to walk to the edge of the sticking-out end. When it tipped into the hole they'd lose one more worker but end up with an upright building with a deep foundation. Say, six floors of basement apartments and seven floors of open air living.
If they were lucky they could figure out which end was the top and get the thing in right-side-up. But don't bet on it. |

The whole thing is just incredible. Looking at those foundations, or the lack of them, and considering that the soil in Shanghai generally is very soft due to the location makes me once again ask the pointless question: what the hell were they thinking? And the best answer again is TIC.
I live in a typical old 6-floor building, not in a compound but on a small street. Many times per day, large overloaded trucks coming from a nearby construction site pass by, and the whole building trembles as if in an small earthquake. Now I´m used to it but at first I was a bit concerned. Anyhow, made me think that the buildings and especially the foundations of them here in Shanghai should be very good. But yeah, you wish...
Indeed very sad that a person died in this accident. But thinking about it, could have been a lot worse if the building would have toppled sometime later. :/ |
