Post subject: Fog or Pollution?

From the window of my apartment which is pretty high up, I see "fog" these days, thickest in the moring. This is summer time and it should not be foggy. Is what I am seeing pollution?

Amusing that one could believe its anything but pollution, but then again, I have seen far worse....both here in Shanghai as well as in many other places.

yes, if you think Shanghai is bad, try Lagos, Mexico City or Dhaka, all places I have visited (mericfully only on very short trips).

I had trouble breathing the first two weeks I was here. The body adapts. The upside is that when you get home you won't believe how clean the air is there.

Ive had to nearly double over on runs as my lungs burn from the smog, gasping for air, feels like im a 4000 meters.

does the cardio benefits outweigh the probable lung cancer Smile

yes, I never thought I'd say it....but the air in London is gorgeous (compared to Shanghai). Actually, the environment here has made me start to think recently whether I want to stay here for too much longer. I want to wake up to mildew in the mornings and condensation on the windows, walk on thick clumpy grass, and sit against fat trunk trees that grow naturally where they want and how they want......okay, I am homesick as well.

Being able to look directly at the setting sun Sad hate it!!! I suppose living in a huge, developing city has its disadvantages, and pollution (noise, light, water and air) are unfortunately on top of the list Crying or Very sad

Shanghai is definitely not the worst, and I must say it's better now than a few years ago.

If it's just pollution then why do we get some beautiful blue sky days without a hint of haze? Is it something to do with the cloud base that traps the pollution below ?

And yes Andreas is correct - used to be much worse.
Wait till we get the black speck days when the farmers are burning the fields.

You are right. First of all smog only gets bad when you have a so called inversion layer in the atmosphere, which traps the air. And most of the times when you see blue skies you will also notice that the prevailing wind is from the sea.

Shanghai is much better than many other cities in China - and that's a scary thought. I've lived in BJ and Shenzhen - had health problems associated with the air.
THat being said, SHA is much better than 5 or 6yrs ago, for sure.

I just came back from 3 weeks in Australia - my body spent 2 weeks in adjusting to the sudden rush of clean air filtering through my system. Second day upon my return to Sha, i was sick for a week - sore throat and cough. Hhhmmmmm...

As others have said, you get used to it, it is getting better, and its far from being the worst in China or many other cities in the world.
