Post subject: Where do the old people go?

Soon, hopefully, finally, we will have an ayi who will be working until midnight on Fridays to look after the Sprog Princess so Handsome Husband and I can have a regular evening out to ourselves. So where should we go? I'm not so interested in hearing about restaurants as that kind of info is all readily available, but more about 'nightspots' - places to hang out for a bit, maybe hear some music, have nice drinks, etc.

We're not interested in going to the places with the hottest babes or boomin'-est DJ's or bikini nights with free shots of whatever whatever or any of that b*ll*cks. We're in our 40s, we don't like dance/pop music, we're not interested in being anywhere where "things don't really get happening" until 2 am (anymore). Just looking for things like comfy, unpretentious pub-type places on up to swanky cocktail joints.

Any suggestions?

i just had a great night at "abbey road" great food, and lots of amusement with my riends, nothing too loud, just enjoy the outside

Big Bamboo is good if the Handsome Husband likes sports. Abbey Road, Blarney Stone, both around Hengshan road. Bubba's.

Swanky joints, maybe Cuvee.

Oh no, should probably have mentioned, hate sports. Please no 'sports bars'.

Thanks for the ideas though.

I read about a club called JZ (I think?) that supposedly has live jazz and draws an older crowd. Any good? We like live music, used to go to quite a lot of shows in London but clearly the music scene here can't compete. But a place to go once in a while that has reasonably reliable quality musicians would be great. Most styles of music OK but as I said early, we're not pop or dance music fans.

JZ is great. You just need to have a high tolerance to second-hand smoke.

Thanks but I have no interest in talking about the economy, I don't know how to play bridge, and no one can fix my tea just the way I like it but me. Now if you want to amend that offer beer, blackjack and books, we might just be up for that...

Try Shanghai People's Park (上海人民公园) on West Nanjing Road.

You should find plenty of old people there. Wink

i don't care for blackjack, but there's an asian version of poker that I enjoy.. it's the one where you go in a circle playing "similar" poker hands and trying to beat the last one (pair of 5's beats a pair of 3's, pair of Kings beats a pair if 5's, if nobody can beat a pair of Ks, they pass, then the person who played the 10 can play anything).

actually on that note, what do the chinese call that game? the verison i play lets you play 2 nonmatching cards in a full house and 7 total with a 4 of a kind.

Well, duh. Of course the 'old' was meant a bit tongue-in-cheek. But the fact is, we hardly want to go anywhere where we will likely be 20 years older than everybody else, because it is just not going to be our scene, is it?

I work with teenagers too, mate. Which is why I've absolutely 0 interest in hanging out with them on my own time, capisce?

Mesa and Manifesto is quite nice to hang out.
If the weather is nice the Big Bamboo at Hong Mei Lu is nice on the terrace.
Jin Mao bar is quite relaxing...Ask for the magician.
SWFC has a really good band in their new bar.
House of Blues and Jazz near the bund is a nice place to hang out.
Brown Sugar at XinTianDi is a good night out.

Piano Bar at Portman is quite relaxing, although very expensive.

I'm a big tea lover (40), and what gets me is how hard it is to find a good tea house. Apparently "the kids don't drink tea any more" in China.

JZ has an upstairs terrace, which should be perfect shortly once the weather cools down a tad. Manifesto has terrace that's relatively quiet and free of riff raff.

By the way, have you ever been to FengJing 金山枫泾?

It is an old Water Town about 1-2 hours away by bus or car. They have a nice old two story Tea House overlooking the canals. Oh, and a lot of old people live there in traditional old houses. Its actually a nice little day out.

The bar within the Dunhill shop at Plaza 66 operated by KEE Club. I just call it the Dunhill Bar. It's small and cozy and the manager Sophie is very friendly. Love the old school kind of interior. You have to access it from the ground floor Dunhill shop then walk down their internal staircases. You can't get there by taking the escalator of the shopping mall as there is no door on their B1 level space.

Again if you don't mind smoky rooms, I really like Cotton Club for live Jazz..
Im biased I guess, as I know a singer there. But still awesome. Big fan of their Lychee martinis, no matter how girly they are Smile
