Post subject: Star Trek

(No spoilers will be given by me, I can't control the responses)

Well it finally made DVD status so I downloaded it today.... I have to admit I was expecting very little. I remember thinking back when they said Sylar would be Spock and how terrible of a choice that was... I thought I would hate the movie.

Well I watched it tonight I was completely blown away. Wow... they really relaunched the whole franchise if they can keep the characters together. I was amazed at how good it was.

Pros - I completely forgot that Sylar was Spock... but as fate would have it, 75% through the movie I finished downloading Heroes the new season episode 1 and 2 and it came back in my mind. But he was so good as Spock it did not even phase me one bit.

Kirk - wow he was great, they casted him perfectly. I just wish they had skipped the whole planet with Spock thing, you will see what I mean later....

Bones (McCoy) - Probably the best cast character of the entire movie... even though his part his limited it was fantastic. He captures the energy so perfect.

Sulu - Sorry I could not stop thinking of Kumar, so that ruined it for me. He probably did a great job, I just could not see it.

Ohura - wow, she was so freakin hot. Wow is all I have to say..... Can't say anything else without ruining plot (her romance though was completely unwatchable).

Scotty - He was brilliant. Perfect casting job.

Captain Pike - I didn't know his history, but he was a very good actor in the movie. Very well done. Reminded me of Denis McQuaid a bit, so had a positive feeling to the character.

Cons -

Chekov - terrible casting job.

Leonard Nimoy - he just forgot how to act... had no passion. He was better in Deep Space 9 or Enterprise than he was in the movie.

OVERALL - I give it a 9/10. It exceeded my expectations. I just wish they had gotten rid of the escape scene from the supernova. Anyone with a fifth grade education understands what happens if you eject the engines hehe.

Despite a poor scenario, I found it to be enjoyable. Clearly, Scotty should have been introduced earlier in the movie, his character is excellent. Good depiction of kirk also, and kudos for the mentioning of the kobayashi maru test; as it was an important part from ST2.

This was a good movie... enough background and action for the newbe watcher and characters and story line stuck pretty close to the originals for us older star trek watchers.

Well I think they designed this movie to relaunch the franchise. Usually in the past whenever anything in the timeline was changed they would pull a superman (i.e. go around the sun a couple times real fast and go back to the past to put everything right). But here they develop a whole new story, put it in a different universe, with new characters... so they can keep the old fans happy telling them alternate universe, and the new ones happy by saying the future isn't all pre-determined. Everything is new now.

Oh and one thing I picked up on the third watching of the movie... Scotty mentions the beagle and said it will turn up sometime he hopes, also mentioned Admiral Archer. So that means it is the beagle that Captain Archer (his son) has in the Enterprise TV show. Pretty clever I thought.

I watched it at IMAX. Totally worth it. And you're right about Uhura's romance being unwatchable. It's just WRONG!

Careful with that. There's a lot of differences between old & new.

Also, Rick_SH, you sure it's released on DVD?

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Chris-Pine/dp/B002HWRYJE

This points it at November 17th. Maybe bootleg dvd version.

skyline5k you are probably 100% correct... I only said released on DVD because the BitTorrent sites said DVDrip... if they say that I assumed there was a DVD for them to make the movie from. Of course I have no idea where they get it from Smile

IsoHunt (and maybe more) seem to always allude to Axxo & FXG/FXM. Chances are, if they release it from a DVD, and it's got about 30 + comments after it within 2 days, it's been released & it's genuine. Generally a good guideline.

But I wouldn't know for sure, because I would NEVER ever resort to piracy when I can give $30 to the MPAA! Very Happy

Super nice? Sure.

I'd give it higher ratings than that though. Like...

It was fucking COOL!!!

There's a Bluray torrent out. Going to give that a shot. See if it's worth downloading a 4 gig bluray vs. a 1 gig dvd.

Though I'll be picking up the movie when its released, I was a bit disappointed with this latest. Thought the actors went a little overboard. Urban was a great Bones, but it seemed like he was in his combative mode the entire movie...that's not the real Bones. Thought Chekov and Scotty were a bit too comical, and Spock a bit too emotional. I mean...c'mon, a love affair between Spock and Uhura?

On the other hand, I do believe this was a smart move by the creators to relaunch Star Trek. All that we have known before can no longer be after this movie.
