Thanks. But is there any regular customers at Oscars who pay less than the quoted 16rmb if only buying a couple of DVD9s?
Considering they are directly across the road from the fake market where every second stall sells DVDs, I thought they would at least be at a comparible rate to the Dagu Lu stores. But then again the fake market sells the crappy versions of new titles and still tells you that they are 'good quality'.
I walk past Oscars every day, but on principle I think I'll continue to buy from Ka De Club if Oscars is going to charge 16 for a dvd9.

Well, as apparently the disc is cost about 1 yuan, the copy process the same, and distribution also 1 yuan.
At 4 rmb, there is a profit of 1, so at 16 the profit is very high.
Of course Oscars will have overheads the street vendor, does not have but surely they could afford to drop their price substantially.

Anybody seen a store that's got District 9 yet? I'd really like to see that one. Also, I'm looking for the new Star Trek movie - I can't seem to find it anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. Smile

There is one on a street that runs parallel to hui hai road, near Shan Xi Road kinda on the back of the old XY market. If you walk down Shan Xi Road then turn right at the major cross over, not the one with the yosinoya shop, you should be able to find it.

10 rmb if you can't be bother arguing for dvd9, large range, and they are especially good for American tv shows. I have found the quality to be good and have pretty much only had 1 or 2 dvds they didn't work from there (out of about 300) If it's a new movie though, ask the lady if the picture quality is good, she will normally tell you if it's a cam.

The street sellers/fake markets all have Star Trek, but when I've asked at Oscars and Ka De Club they said still not good quality. But it should be out soon.
I haven't seem District 9 in the shops yet, so I downloaded it the other day, just haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Sometimes even the odd swiss movie or other foreign language stuff.

What I like about this place is they have one season on one disc for some TV series such as Friends and Sex and the City, so you can have the entire Friends on 10 discs instead of paying about 700 rmb for the entire 10 season box set. Quality of course is not as sharp but good enough for stuff like Friends which we've all seen many times already.

New in Shanghai (and here), am looking for TV series, but would acutally prefer versions like the one described above, more on one disc with slightly lower quality. Can they be found anyhere now?

Angel DVD on Jiaozhou Lu, just north of Jing'an Temple, is one of my favourite shops. They have the boxed sets but if you go to the back left hand corner, you'll find all the TV series in cheaper packs and fewer discs.

I paid around 6yuan for DVD9 on DA GU Road. Cant remember exactly which one i went. Maybe the one next to the newsagent selling FT and Vogue.

The shop assistant said the price was 7yuan for each as my friend has a royality card there was a little discount on top of it.

But i bought one of the music live concert by Mika. The price was 10yuan. no discount. cant be read by my dvd player.. I will only buy from the shops if i cant find free on the internet to download.

Usually I try to download .iso file. This is (should be) an exact clone of the original DVD and can be burned directly to a blank dvd, creating a copy of the original, including the menu structure etc.
For movies where I can only get avi or mp4, then there is software that will author into dvd format and either make a .iso file on your hard disk (for later burning) or directly burn to the blank dvd.
Two programs I use. First is Windows Movie Maker (this came preinstalled on my vista machine). Also Nero works ok.
Finally, if I download from B** iplayer (which has DRM protection), then I run the file through Tunebite software. This re-records the file without the drm, which removes the 30 day play limit. The resulting file can then be authored to create a dvd. I usually let Tunebite run overnight with a whole bunch of drm files, because in this mode it needs to convert at normal speed, so takes time.

Shangstar,
Most of the files that I download are Divx or Xvid.
The newer DVD players will play these files without any conversion. Just save the file on a DVD and play it.
What I am looking for is a free converter to convert ISO files to Divx/xvid/Mpeg in order to reduce the size....Any tips would be appreciated.

Try Ally, whose shop I have posted about before on here. It's in Pudong, on Pudong Nan Lu near Zhangyang Lu. Cross the walkway by McDonalds on Pudong Nan Lu then the entrance is behind you when you come down the steps. There's a nail place and a small restaurant by the entrance. She has pretty much every show on DVD9 which is great as I only have to change a DVD about once every two days now. That's energy saving at it's best.
