well...first it's "yu garden" good place to visit
but i don't recommend Nanjing avenue, cuz it's kinda out-of-date(maybe just for us chinese only, don't know what foreiners in shanghai think about it)
if u like night life a lot,im sure u won't disappointed .there're many good night clubs and bars here.
there are lot of bars and restaurants on Hengshan Rd.and in Xintiandi.

I guess it depends on where you are from, but I think East Nanjing Road is worth a visit at night time when all the neon lights are on.
If the weather is clear go up the arch of Lupu Bridge, great views of the city and the Expo site. |

The huangpu river cruise was quite nice. A few operators offering this on the Bund next to the river. Best to go at twilight or night, to get the full effect.
If you want to check out all those big buildings up close, take the subway to Lu Zia Zui and walk around. There, aside from some very tall buildings, you will also find Pearl Tower, Superbrand Mall, and the other side of the huangpu river, overlooking the Bund (which is also a nice view.) And the shanghai aquarium, which is maybe worth a visit if you've got kids.
People's Square has a museum of Shanghai, which is worth a visit.
Take the subway to Xu Jia Hui, and there is a very nice shopping area. Great for electronics and computers (you will probably get ripped off, but nevermind...)
Another good shopping area is the subway station at the Science Museum in Pudong. Century Park is also nearby, which is quit a nice park.
Finally, the old temple area has a true wholesale market where you can pick up some great deals if you know where to go and how to haggle.
Now, if you had enough time, I could recommend some excursions outside Shanghai. One very nice place is Hangzhou which has a particularly beautiful lake called West Lake. Google it to see what I mean. |

They do a good snake at the Merrylin hotel. http://www.merrylin.com/
I don't know where you'd find Russian prostitutes, but the Concierge at the Shangri-la will.
Where are you coming from that the first two things you think of in Shanghai are white hookers and snake? |

You may first want to check with the airline because you could certainly not use this ticket from the US. US carriers are now required since a past few months to verify that the name on the ticket matches the name on the passport and that gender and date of birth has been supplied to the air carrier in advance under the new APIS system. This may not apply to you, but you should at least check out with the airline if your country has a similar program or allows you to use a ticket issued to another person. |

jasonnoguchi is right, there now is a heavy construction from the nanjing avenue to the bund, for the preparation of EXPO. so, you may go another side of the huangpu river to get views. that's also great. |

| Post subject: Mobile Travel Guide for Shanghai |
If you have an iPhone or an Android, then download a mobile travel guide. I would recommend that you download the Urbian Travel Guide for Shanghai.
It has over 400 Points of Interest organized by location and category. But what really sets it apart from the other apps is its audio phrase book. With this app you can learn a variety of basic phrases and hear their pronunciation. And if you don't want to try to speak the phrases yourself - you can simply let your phone do the talking for you. It will even speak taxi directions for the points of interest. Its $8 but it will make your trip go much more smoothly. For more info you can visit www.urbian.biz/apps.html . Good luck and have fun! |

I'm cool man, just collecting some usefull info, i appreciate the nice advices i got here (and i've searched the forum deeply to not look like a lazy man hehehe) and i appreciate the insults too, you know, on the internet, everybody is a cage fighter, a wall street player, a president, a holywood actor, and god knows what else
So far, my list goes like this:
Nanjing road, The Bund, Pudong (oriental pearl, shanghai world financial center, the mall next to the pearl), yu garden (yes now i know its not yun), some street food which might not exist anymore and appeared on tv in that tv show hosted by bourdain, qibao ancient town and umhh that place full of electronics near a metro station.
Im not sure if im gonna make it outside shanghai to one of those venice towns or whatever they call it, but i'll keep investigating.
Feel free to recommend me anything else |

Download the Subway map and take a day long subway tour. First off go over the side of the Bund you will be on from your hotel, the Pearl, the 2 tallest sky scrapers and the river side. You can take the underwater tram to the opposite side and get to NanJing Lu, best seen at night. From there you can get on the main intersection between Line 1 and Line 2 gets you from PuDong (your hotel). On line 2 go to Centry Park just to see a big park here, then JingAn Temple inside the city center, its not a historic temple but its good enough for a few days visit. ZhongShan Park is not too far off and gets you to line 3 and 4 where you can get back to Line 1 at Shanghai indoor stadium, an interesting stop. On Line 1 you can visit the amusement park on the south side, it isn't big but has a big ferris wheel to see the city from. For a few days visit the subways are easy, cheap, and you won't end up getting the old taxi tour which is quite expensive.
Not much for night life but Mao is popular, definately go to Hungchao Lu for bars. I have seen lots of Russians around the area I am in, not sure of their profession. I just took the in-laws out for snake dinner last night (elder day festival here) and it cost about $120 USD. It was good and pleanty of food, there was a much more expensive dinner available. Its on KaiXuan Lu just off the Line 3/4 HungChoa Lu station.
I would also exchange your money here and not outside the country. I found exchange rates at foreign banks are bad for RMB, go to a bank and NOT the airport or hotel places, just find a Bank of China or ICBC, they are everywhere and exchange your money there. Bargin hard for anything you get on the street here, everything is negotiable, and get some smaller bills, breaking 100 RMB notes in a taxi is bad and you may get fake money, foreigners have a hard time telling the real from fake bills here (I use a small pen light that is black light).
Definately read some reviews of sites, times, etc. that spark your interest. Make a list, find them on the subway map and map out and plan your days. Take a day to adjust to the time zone change and use that as an excuse for your massage. Take a camera with lots of memory as you will be tempeted to take pictures of almost everything here, you should see People's Square subway stating at rush hour, its pure chaos. With proper planning you can experience the side of the city you are most interested in and not be too rushed or dissapointed by typical toruists traps (Yu Garden is just a place to look at, not much there other then some shops selling overpriced toruists stuff). |

assume you are 1st time visitor, i would do:
--- the bund.
as others said its under construction, but still must see. take a leisure stroll on the water front, check out the pudong skyline. then cross the street via underground walkway, relax at one of the bar or restaurant along the bund #3, #5 and etc. jean george, new heights, mr&mrs bund, m on the bund, are all there. some joints has outdoor terrace, afternoon tea or drinks at night will be nice, with sick view.
---- Yu Garden. yes its a tourist trap, but you have to go once.
go to the nanxiang xiaolongbao place. go up to the 3rd floor, turn left, thats where the waiting is least, cuz you have a minimum order amount. you can easily meet the quota even if you have 2 ppl, don't wait like a amateur nukka downstairs.
alot of shops and snack places there, browse around.
--- nanjing road and huaihai road.
sorta like the 5th ave and 57th st shopping in manhattan. good for a nice walk, stop by for drinks/snacks. designer brands are more expensive here than north america, so no point in doing any real shopping.
--- snack street, wujiang road.
go there for yang's fried xiaolongbao, its such as shack but an expensive to have. eat like local. walk further up, its a nicer complex, with coffee shops, restaurants and etc. there is a nicer version of yang's in the mall too, same price, if you can not deal with the shack.
walk up from the snack street, pass four season hotel, there is a street shimen 2 road, alot of massage places, legit ones.
--- pudong side.
ur staying at shangri la, location is great. hope ur in the new wing, rooms are nice there. check out the jade 36 at the hotel, get a nice view of the puxi side.
cloud 89 at grand hyatt, lobby bar at the park hyatt (which is in the IFC tower) all give a decent view.
--- night life.
if ur into bar scene, go to tongren road.
if ur into club scene, go to m1nt, muse, and fuxin park.
m1nt crowd is more mature, alot of foreigners. supposedly members only but not strictly enforced. place is nice.
muse, (and sky lounge etc next door) are popular local hangouts. super crowded on weekend, make sure get table reserved in advance.
fuxin park, there is ricky, muse 3 and etc there. also more of a local scene.
--- interesting that u mentioned bourdain. i love his show too.
though i personally don't know any hidden small eats spots other than the snack street.
--- few days u might not have enough time for a day trip out of shanghai. if you do, suzhou or hangzhou will be the best choices.
thats all i can think of now. |
