Post subject: Board Game Cafe: The Ever-growing trend

Hey guys,

Just recently someone posted about having board games at their bar such as Settlers of Catan, etc, and I originally commented on that post but decided to delete it afterwards because it strayed from the OP's topic....in any case Booty Bay (yeah the name was based off of a WOW name translated into English...wish I had a say in it but I was voted down heh) is a store that some of my local friends and I have setup. It's set to be the largest board game store available in Shanghai and it will be located in Wu Jiao Chang, next to Fudan university. For students studying at Tongji, Fudan, and Cai Da, if you are looking for games like Taboo, Settlers of Catan, Sanguo, or any other game (we've imported around 80 different games) feel free to drop by our store during our soft opening on October 24th.

Boardgames are indeed sweeping China like wildfire, and it's one of the most popular socializing events for local white collar workers and university students. If you don't want to be left outta the trend or you want to see how you can get a piece of the pie, I suggest now is a good time to see what it's all about! Our store does cater to expats (all of our games imported and in English, and we have an American and a Singaporean among our shareholders) and we will be working with foreign student organizations to help with ice-breakers and such for new students.

This weekend (October 17th and 18th) is a test launch for the soft opening a week after, and it will be free for anyone who wants to come (Please PM me first though with a headcount).

Address wil be Han Dan Lu 571, or 邯郸路571号 in Yang Pu District.

Boardgames in cafes. Just another excuse for people not to have to talk to each other, rather like dice games in bars...

You've obviously never played board games before. Boardgames are all about the socializing and conversing with each other which is why it's such a mainstream thing to do among local Chinese people now.

If you can't catch on to the trends of Chinese people how do you expect to thrive in Shanghai kiddo.

Yeah, the new Chinese middle class seems to devote their time and money to this lately. They don't want to go home and face their parents or they're too lazy to have jobs, so they go play board games. It's like a less creepy internet bar, but with far more Shanghai Princess types.

Sure, that may be the case on certain occasions, but all the times I've seen young people playing board games in cafes, they have been stone-faced, not talking to each other.

Rather like the "trend" of going to bars, hiring a table, buying a few jugs of knock-off Chivas with green tea, then saying absolutely nothing to each other for the entirety of the evening, until the choicer girls are picked off by some sweaty waiguoren for a night of mindless mutual masturbation.

Sitting around playing a board game with people is less creepy than playing with strangers over the internet?
