A lot of vitriol on this thread, some of it probably justified against the wasters in town, but I think some perspective would be good.
I'd certainly agree that there are too many wannabe DJs floating about, that there are a few foreigners making no useful contribution in Shanghai. But generally, the amount of people coming to live in Shanghai and sample its delights is an inevitable consequence of living in a happening city. People get to hear that its an exciting place and word gets spread. You all know how it works.
I am not sure why there is so much hating on this thread, sure, I think laptop Djs are almost always devoid of merit, maybe some English teachers aren't here for the right reasons, but whatever, good luck to em I say, they are most likely having an adventure and maybe, just maybe, they might learn something useful from their time here that they would not back home.
The real problem in the DJ scene is that the crowd are uneducated and they don't know the difference between someone who has spent years honing their skills and understanding of music, and some clown with a laptop jumping about and playing electro-rock.
It's sad, but true. |

It's the upside-down headphones, sunglassses indoors at night and the nodding, isn't it.
Takes years of hard graft to get that kind of stuff right.
Mozart didn't know how easy he had it. |

Bottom line - If you are a DJ and you take yourself seriously, then you are a tool. |

I don't get it.....Shanghai is one of the Greatest cities in the World...Some hick from a smalltime college town in the Midwest thinks he's hot **** cause he's a DJ from the States.....Try Ningbo or Nanjine, maybe more of what you're used to.... |

Except for the parade of kids and parents who have been bilked out of money they really can't afford for tuition.
Except for the school who hired him having to deal with the inevitable mess.
Except for the next actual English teacher who replaces him and gets ****'ed over in the usual ways. The cycle of inaneness continues.
Except for the rest of the working population of hard-working and professional teachers who get repeatedly dragged through the mud by guys like this.
Except the rest of us who will end up with visa nightmares caused by the above scenario. |

Meh... 6 to one, half a dozen to the other. Laptop or turntables, anyone who pays more than beer money to a DJ in this city is barking mad.
I know one guy who's been DJing in Shanghai for years. He gets paid squat to play in bars and clubs. He's got a good stage persona and is skilled on the mic. He makes most of his real money playing weddings and other events that require an MC who can announce, run games, contests etc.. He knows his music inside and out, and will cheerfully play the macarena, hokey-pokey, whatever his clients ask for. He does this line of business for the fun, the partying and the occassional phone number. He doesn't consider it real work and feels very very lucky to able to do what he does.
He's the only non-tool DJ I've ever met, and working in the bar industry I've met plenty. |
