no, am not SMUG abt our racism at all. but the thing is China is a bit different from Korea becoz the country's whole economy is largely relying on the western world and it tells the reason that Chinese, especially in the cities along east coast line, are friendly to foreigners, if not VERY. If you specifically refer to Indian and black people, I think it's not becoz of their color, it's becoz of where they come from. I don't think Chinese are against color so much, but Chinese do like to laugh at poor people, so it makes sense if they mock at a Chinese-African couple.But again, it's not abt color.

Btw, I dont understand y people keeps saying China will become the next America or super powerful becoz I don't see either is coming. China is a very poor country and will still be a poor country for a very long time. By very long, i mean 100 years or 500 years. You cant judge China only based on the growing number of middle class and rich people, becoz they r less than the tip if an iceberg. Millions of Chinese are struggling to survive, everyday, and i dont c it will change soon.

I agree franceswang, I don't think China really is the next superpower, I agree there's a huge problem with the poor countryside etc. But don't you get the feeling in China in the last 18 months, i.e. since US economic troubles and then Beijing Olympics, that many people in China are starting to really believe that China's time has come, China is really the greatest etc, and so there has been an increase in xenophobia, not just on internet but on streets? That is my feeling after ten years here, and my (Chinese) partner's feeling too. There have been just a few more hints of nastiness around, of Chinese getting more confident about 'standing up' to the west in their daily lives.

And I agree, yes, that Chinese are more obsessed with money than Koreans/Japanese are with race, and that Chinese would have more respect for a black man with money than Japanese/Koreans probably would. BUT that doesn't mean there isn't a large amount of racial stuff in there too, and the thing is it comes more from urban educated people, the ones who've been brainwashed at school about China's coming greatness. Look at the abuse of that half black girl who was on that tv singing show, and the couple on subway whose picture got on the internet.

Point is as China starts to believe they are the richest and most powerful country in the world (whether it's true or not), and it finds the confidence to look down on more of the rest of us, does it matter whether the reason is mainly racial or mainly about money? "All black people are poor" is just as racist as "all black people smell", and of course 99% of the Chinese people who believe one of these sentences believe the other one too.

So I'm just saying, give it time. When there are tons of south-east asian or African people over here trying to marry locals or take part in the economic good times, we'll be able to really see just how tolerant or racist China is.

Name one country that isn't rasist or bigoted towards foreigners.
Minorities are an easy target, happens everywhere.
The twisted fate is that when the foreigner returns home, he will be prejudice against what ever race was prejudice against him.

rldh, I agree with you regarding some of the points. But much fewer Chinese are against a British Indian or African American. We dont think all black are poor, and many of educated people, or those you said "brainwashed" ,appreciate Obama.

you mentioned that half black gal, the sluts I see from the internet is more abt sexist than racial, (if you take black guys have the strongest thing down there as something racism, becoz this is the only thing they say abt black). Mostly they call her mother a whore who just want to experience wonderful sex that her husband, who suddenly presents all the Chinese guy,couldnt give her. Not a big deal. I think if she was a half white, people would say the pretty similar thing to her too.

I lived there for a while, and agree with the stuff about the country having little man syndrome- hearing stuff like "Korean potatoes are the best in the world!" (that made me do a lol), and yeah sure they have problems.

They do know it though- I heard Koreans describe the country as like a frog at the bottom of a well- thinking that the bit of the sky they can see if the whole world.

We're talking about a country that only really opened up after the Korean war. They're penned in by China and Japan- both of whom used to own the place, and it's only recently that they had any $$s. I still give them a pass for another 50 years before they need to start playing nice with the other kids.

RoK doesn't have the highest suicide rate in the world btw- it's up there, but below Japan and some USSRy type places

Canada... well at least in the cities where most people live.. head to the backwoods and you'll find all kinds of dumb ass backward beliefs... some are anti - Canadian (ie. French communities that hate English speaking people and visaversa)

Um, a very long time? And you base this upon? Yes parts will be poor. In 1997 Canada had a bad ice storm where power went out for weeks. A story went that the power company connected the power to one farm and apologized for the delay to which the farmer replied that he had never had electricity before but thanked him nonetheless.

China can be literally be only half as productive as the U.S. and still have an economy that is more than 2x bigger as there are more people here. The U.S. and U.K. didn't take much more than 100 years to go from nasty brutish and short living conditions for all but the wealthy to wealth for virtually all that work (and most that don't) and China has the benefit that more technologies have been invented and that companies the world over are investing here like mad.

So, please elaborate. I want to believe that beneath the "becoz" and "i dont c" deliberate misspellings and simplistic platitudes that you have the ability to come up with a well-reasoned argument. Prove the condescending stereotype here wrong!

No, you can be any colour you want if your money is green. And industry that needs labour will hire whomever and push against further controls to stop illegals (or, in some cases, legalization as it gives workers the freedom to stand up against, or walk away from mistreatment).
