So you're saying your arguments are based on complete fiction and have nothing to do with reality. Okay, you're finally making some sense.
It's pretty clear you're a complete idiot, so there's no point in even talking to you anymore. Welcome to my ignore list (2 in 1 day, surprising).

Zoolander, final question from me, before I sign off. You're not a Chinese mainlander. So, why don't you go back home? After all, China doesn't need you right? |

I better repeat that for you. In BIG LETTERS. S
PLEASE READ WHAT I WROTE CAREFULLY.
It is VERY HARD to find to local upper-managerial talent. (But we find them)

This is got to be the funniest thread i have read in a long time, from the moment dimwit zoolander popped in, cheers guys!
Just wanted to add a bit of useless information in, Back in the old days in HK when the I.C.A.C. (Independant Commission Aganist Corruption) was established, word on the street was it would not work since the "ACTUAL" meaning of the letters is (Interfering Chinese Ancient Customs), thankfully that did not happen and they have gone on snag quite a few bigwigs who thought they were above the law. |

| Post subject: Balance |
All very well putting China's recent success down to foreigners but a little balance is in order, no? There are plenty of Chinese owned and run factories, yes generally less well run than foreign owned plants, but things have and are improving vastly (i.e. Chinese managers becoming more sophisticated, better treatment of workers, technological progress etc). You look around Shanghai, you see foreign influences everywhere, but i at least see enormous desire to change and improve. I don't see young people spitting, let alone p$ssing etc in the street - in fact, besides spitting where is all this unsanitary behaviour so glaringly in evidence? Clearly there is awareness of this being an issue...but by the Chinese themselves! Starting with national and local governments. It's one thing to criticise poor education/work ethic/management etc. but some of the comments here about allegedly irredeemably uncivilised behaviour are crude to the point of racist. |

I never said it was irredeemable, but it still happens. Despite government warnings against it. Seen a taxi driver pinch a loaf next to a tree in the French Concession. Seen MANY children piss openly onto the sidewalk, in the aisles of a supermarket and on just about everything else. Don't tell me you haven't seen it. I've seen young adults pissing and puking openly in the streets after a night of drinking (not just locals though).
Is it racist? It's not intended to be. It's just my observations as well as many others. My point was never to say that these things that they do make them inferior as a race. But they do need to come to the realization that it's not healthy for them or the people around them. |

I think it is a mistake expecting standards on people that are still earning third world wages. When (if) china wages are the same level as Europe/Japan/US...then you have a right to compare manners/sanitation/work ethic....When I go to a 8 rmb noodle shop/200 rmb hotel I expect a different level of service/sanitation then when I go to a 100+ rmb dining place/2000 rmb hotel.
Of the "third" world cities I've been to been to Tijuana (worse), Bangkok (better), Mumbai/New Delhi (worse), Bali (not sure) I've found China's overall infrastructure/sanitation to be quite good although service wise it has been ok but as good as some other cities. |

Going to ignite my blowtorch.
Blah, Blah Blah.
Avoiding the thread completely.
* Let's start with successful removal of ugly, unnecessary and frivolous foreign inventions vis :
Electricity
Cars
Computers
Plastic
Water pipes
(others can continue, or I'd be typing until 3 a.m.)
* This zoolander specimen is 1 major PITA and I wonder when he/she will realise that sloppy spaghetti-type arguments contesting sound logic from seasoned and respected posters is utterly futile.
Joined in July '08 and has 128 informative, useful - yet provocative posts ? You say.

Returning to thread.
I don't know if I'm in the wrong but my Chinese colleagues have some passion for their jobs, and I encourage them every day - with very positive feedback.
And I monitor their performance, just by listening. It's not my place, I don't have to write reports but in my experience, Chinese Managers are excellent at criticising and shaming.
(Zak101, do not start a sentence with a conjunction).
I'm the opposite.
Topic : The Chinese Work Ethic.
Role of a Manager : Praise achievements, real rewards.
I get to nominate the winners. |

How about the Jews who fled to Shanghai during WW2? Were they invaders too? You clearly have such a futile grasp of the topic at hand that it's baffling me as to why you continue to try and sound like an authoritarian on the subject.

1) i thought you already put me on ignore list? it was all talking, wasn't it?
2) only a moron would compare 1845 to today.
china was a self-enclosed country in qing dynasty, remember? they did not have a diplomatic relation with western countries. the foreigners knocked on their doors with canons guns ships and forced their way in. 1/2 of the so called traders sold opium to poison the chinese.
it is beyond me how anyone can compare that to the expats today.
3) even if u must compare, and must see them as the exact same thing.
everything is neutralized during the war, isn't it? whatever the glorious things those so called expat did in contribution to china economy in 19 centuries, were wiped out when china founded itself in 1949. other than trace of structures such as the bank buildings on the bund, there was nothing carried over. they had no money, no credit, no biz infrastructure/network, nothing.
thus whatever contribution from foreigners in 19 centuries, had virtually no impact on the last 30 years of china development.
4) Jews who fled to Shanghai during WW2? they were refugees.
u can not possibly define someone expat just cuz its a foreigner going to another country to work/live.
otherwise all the chinese went to the usa 120 yrs ago, that built railroad and mined gold, were they expats too?? or were they slaves???
5) you are sh1t. you know sh1t. f0ck off. |

It wouldn't be in the stone age but it would definitely not be the worlds second (third) largest economy without it. What if all the foreign investment which went to China would have been redirected to for example India?

foreign investment has been going to india as long as it has been going to china.

urbanization is when rural communities migrating from rural areas to urban cities. those ppl are not capable of working at ibm or gm factories.
the government urbanizing its cities, which create jobs for those rural area migrates, which demand materials/products that drive other industries.
matter of fact a big part of china's GDP is due to urbanization. when government pours in trillions, into development of infrastructures and etc. that will happen regardless if foreign investment existed or not. |

REALLY? Just think about Shanghai and all the nice restaurants here, buildings, hotels, malls, foreign companies and other things that come from foreign influence, money or companies. Now remove all the expat influence, all those restaurants and buildings, hotels, malls, jobs from foreign companies and jobs based on the foreign community. What's left?
Maybe you don't see it, but just walk around. Remove anything with foreign influence and see if that paints a pretty picture of Shanghai. |
your statement would be correct, IF you walk into a fancy mall, restaurant, bars, buildings, hotel ... etc ... everyone you see is foreigner.
but thats certainly not the case.
shanghai built its fancy malls and skycrappers, for the modernization of the city. in all the nice restaurants clubs bars hotels XTD, there are plenty of chinese consumers.
you like to admit or not, there is enough chinese money that's being spent at all those establishments.
of course, foreign spending is a big part too. although not every foreigner in shanghai is an expat, many of them are either businesmen flying in and out or tourists.
in any case. i agree that expats spending helps the local business and is welcomed.
i just completely do not buy the bullsh1t that without expats it will be a ghost town. thats a joke. if next week every expat left shanghai, the clubs will still be jam packed, restaurants will still have ppl dine at, hotel will still have guests. life won't change, ppl still eat drink hang and bang. cuz shanghai is not hanoi, there is enough local money. |

China loved the Opium. Poison or not, they chose to smoke it. If they didn't, Britain would have no one to sell to and the Opium would have stopped. Really? You think there'd be high rise buildings, mexican, italian, french cuisine, cafes, bakeries, the internet, computers, beer and cars here if it weren't for expats? Chances are pretty slim that if China had closed its borders and said "NO EXPATS" that any of those things would have made its way into Chinese culture or ever been made. One thing is apparent about Chinese culture, and that is that until they see it, touch it and experience it themselves, there is no understanding, and without expats to have brought all those things into Shanghai, there would be no desire for them by the Chinese and thus they never would have been made.

oh really. so hypothetically, if china exported cocaine into britain by force, brits do drugs and government is too weak to fight china to stop it. are you telling me its british ppl's own fault to do drugs? and china is improving their lives??
you are laughable.

of course all of those things would still exist. are you really that stupid to think otherwise??
lets use north korea as an example, you would agree there aren't really any expats there, since its a self-enclosed nation.
are you really telling me there is no beer, no internet, no computer, no cars, no foreign cuisine no cafe and bakery shops there??? they have all of those. whether their ppl can afford or have access to it, its another question. but they have all those things.
with the developing and modernization of china, all those things are bounded to appear and stay for good. its mind boggling to me that you think without expat there is forever only chinese food in china???
also remember, expats are not the only foreigners in china, they are foreign business travelers and tourists.
