| Post subject: Best location to learn chinese. |
I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find it. When I go to China my main initial priority is to learn Mandarin. Shanghai looks like a fun place, but the local language is Wu. So unfortunately I'm looking for somewhere else. Beijing is not a nice place to live by all accounts, so its a last resort. Any suggestions? Also has anyone done a language exchange over skype? |

Don't let people tell you can't learn mandarin in shanghai. The language spoken the majority of the time is Mandarin.
Besides, there are local dialects everywhere you go besides the Beijing area, so if you don't want to live in Beijing, it doesn't matter where you go, you will come across a local dialect.....or ten.
I study in Shanghai and have no problems fighting off the shanghainese and 99% of what I hear around me is mandarin. No worries. |

I would agree - Shanghai works just fine. I'm learning Mandarin here. My wife and my tutor are from Beijing so I can get the dialect differences (some words in standard Mandarin, Beijing Mandarin and Shanghai Mandarin are slightly different) but really, Shanghai is an as easy a place for a foreigner as anywhere in China (though I wouldn't mind living on Hainan Island - warm all year round). |
