Btw, I dont understand y people keeps saying China will become the next America or super powerful becoz I don't see either is coming. China is a very poor country and will still be a poor country for a very long time. By very long, i mean 100 years or 500 years. You cant judge China only based on the growing number of middle class and rich people, becoz they r less than the tip if an iceberg. Millions of Chinese are struggling to survive, everyday, and i dont c it will change soon.

China's economy will become the largest in the world when Chinese GDP per capita is approximately 20% of US GDP per capita (hint: use national population as the denominator). Many Chinese and many with poor math skills will interpret this as "China is the greatest".

everybody knows that china will not be a superpower. but why create the china threat theory?

revenge! given what the other richer countries did to china in the last 200 years...even china just develp a tiny bit, they are worried that china will come back to them!

china wont be rich for 100 years, but shanghai will be the best city, the centre of the world very soon

it bores the hell out of me to say it but that was my dissertation.

20-50 years basically. it all depends as when the clinton years and 8% growth in USA, then it would be more like 60 years, but now more like 20. all depends

to call it "china threat" is quite misleading as its just basic realist theory. any dominant power will go to war with an emerging competitor. realist theory is soundly accepted as true. u can believe the world is a different place and all evidence that says realist theory is not true is crap. but all the evidence says it is true.

personally i think america shud nuke china now as chinese people r vile little scumbags and as far as i know chinese ICBMs r only capable of nuking west coast USA and i hate their whiney little accents

"Everybody" doesn't know China won't be a superpower. I think there are at least 1.4 billion people who think it will. Wink

There's probably some guilt factored into the fears of China as superpower, but I think it's more than that. Powerful nations have a habit of believing their power springs from moral superiority. If China begins to believe its own hype (just as the US has for the last 60 years), it won't be content to stay at home and mind its own business. This is doubly worrisome when the superpower is also a totalitarian gerontocracy. Old guys have a lot less to lose when they start potentially catastrophic wars.

But I agree with you that Shanghai has some great qualities. It has an excellent transit system, a feeling of expansiveness with its wide streets and beautiful public spaces, and it has preserved some of its most charming architecture. It's definitely a cosmopolitan world-class city. And despite complaints I read here, I find the people in Shanghai to be generally polite when you're polite to them. A smile and a respectful Chinese greeting go a long way. There are certainly racists and misanthropes, but I see those in every city.

But Shanghai "the best city"? Far from it. The comfort of most Shanghai residences is poor in summer and winter, air and water quality in Shanghai are abysmal, and anything approaching a "natural environment" is almost totally absent. As many natives of Shanghai have told me, "Shanghai is a city for making money, not for living". Every time I go back to Shanghai, I appreciate its good qualities, but I prefer life in my home city more and more. I've talked to many "old China hands" back home who said ~ 10 years in China was all they could bear. They say you just get worn down by the noise, dirt, climate and discomfort. Amen.

^Agree with point about China likely future peacefulness. Every modern empire-builder starts out claiming that they're anything but, they only want to do business and not get involved in local politics. The Spanish, Brits and Americans all did it, and it is what China's claiming now as it gets involved in Africa and Asia. And just like the others China'll get slowly sucked into the involvement necessary to protect their investment, necessary because their presence has warped the local economy and politics. And before they realise it - bang! - they'll have a bunch of colonies. Impossible to 'just do business' the way China wants in Africa without causing a big mess which for business reasons they'll end up having to get more involved in than they want. China's prime concern is securing resources for itself, and states only have armies to protect their own interests, so if you're the biggest eater around you'll end up having to use the big stick to protect your share of the pie sooner or later.

The twisted fate is that when the foreigner returns home, he will be prejudice against what ever race was prejudice against him. -coffee hawk

I'm going back to New York City real soon. The way frances wang goes on rants about how its ok to call a mother a slut who had sex with a black guy , and how it's "not about color" when it comes to us(blacks); why would't I want to throw a rock through the window of a Chinese restuarant in the Bronx who makes a fortune from us "poor as Ni**ers" so that they can send money home to the people who talk crap about us?

You are very right Coffee Hawk, but I'm a bigger man and to do whats others here have done to me is small.

I'm a black guy married to a Chinese woman, and she can't understand why I hate taking the subway, and bus here. It's like being stuck in purgatory, everyonr always staring and making stupid comments. It's not the migrants , or the uneducated, it's the urbanites that claim to be educated. I do feel the tension and the arrogance in the air. I always want to get off at the next stop only to get a tongue bashing by my highly insensitive wife.

It's what we call the 'half educated'. They are the worst.

I am blessed with loads of self absorption and total ignorance of the chinese language, I don't notice when people talk about me or stare. But I did have a chinese lawyer in my office tell me how terrified she was of black people in new york because in movies they all have guns and shoot people for no reason. This really ruined my enjoyment of American Gangster on tv this weekend.

No, sometimes that happens. But it happens rarely enough that I feel confident telling her she was being paranoid by refusing to sit next to a black person in the subway because she was afraid she would be shot. I told her all American kids think the Chinese can do Kung Fu. Must be true, I saw Kung Fu Panda, they wouldn't make a movie about something for pure entertainment, would they?

TV and movies make the rare seem commonplace, and make people believe the world is a much more dangerous place than it actually is. Somebody wins a big lottery almost every day, but that doesn't motivate me to buy lottery tickets (which are nothing more than a voluntary tax on poor math skills).

PSHAW! People of every race in every movie whip out guns and shoot people for no reason. Or for very little reason. Hell, I think I've seen more random violence in asian films (particularly Korean and Japanese) than I have in films with black people.

In fact...

Yeah, I can't think of a movie with lots of black people in it that I've seen recently... or any...

huh...

Movies are RACIST!

not every incident is shooting related, but i can fully understand her concern.
not being racist or anything but stats does show blacks has the highest crime rate in new york city, so if u have a preference of not sitting next to a black guy, i won't say ur ridiculous.
also i don't know what you definition of "rare" is, but i see those stuff on news almost daily.
so don't mislead your chinese friends now Laughing
