Post subject: Pearl Shopping at Pearl City, HongMei Rd

I am going down to Pearl City tomorrow to do some last minute shopping. Anyone who have been there recently care to share:

a) Do they accept credit payments there?? Any surcharges?

b) What is the bargaining method you employ?

c) What is a approx. price range like ..say for a silver necklace with a single pearl (1 cm diameter)?? Or a simple bracelet of pearls (~7 to 9mm diameter)

Looked through the postings here but some are outdated and may not offer latest information. Thks in advance.

I live nearby the Pearl City. I can try answer your questions:

a) shops there only accept - or prefer - cash

b) asking for 70% to 80% off of their introduction price is common. don't show that you're eager to buy the items, just play like you don't care...at the end you may be settled at 60% off.

c) it's hard to tell, mostly coz the pearls have different quality range....anything from Rmb60/strand to thousands of Rmb. the silver....most of the shops there sell silver-plated, not whole silver. sorry I can't help you much on this one...

fyi, they just opened the 3rd floor. you may wanna see the jewelries there. happy shopping!

I frequently shop @ First Asia Jewelry Plaza at YuYuan (3rd floor for pearls). Sterling silver chain (yes, do be cautious about metal content) with one large pearl will actually run you more than a strand of pearls with a .925 SS clasp. A bargain on a 18" ss chain with pearl would be appx 100-150¥. An "A" graded 18" strand of fresh water 7-8mm pearls would run you appx 40-50¥. A bracelet will run a little more than half that - earrings are practically nothing.

There are several grades of pearls, and there are many degrees of reputable dealers. So, unless you know your pearls I would suggest forgetting the up-sell of 'best quality'. NOW - Akoya salt water pearls are a different animal than the fresh water pearls, and will run more.

Chances are most dealers will have the lariat style necklace with one pearl with rhodium chain - it's a rhodium plate, though - so be forewarned (expect to pay appx 35-40¥). Oh! And tell them the items are gifts and most vendors will give you a gift box.

Good luck!
