A new place I think, at least I hadn't seen before...Luneta in Julu Lu...near the junction with Fumin Lu, next to a Freshmart and pretty near Mesa.

Filipino food but there were a few western dishes too. Didn't try their fish and chips but will be back for that. Can't remember the names of the food we had, sorry, but there was one chicken and pork dish which was fantastic.

Bonus was that the drink seemed to be two for the price of one...at least my four bottles of beer came to 50rmb. Looks like the kind of place you could just drop in for a drink if you wanted. More like a bar with tables than a restaurant with a bar if you know what I mean. I'll be back anyway.

Finally got around to trying lunch at Pasti the other day ... spaghetti is pretty good, better than average anyhow. Good quality and al dente, even. And the prices are not totally ridiculous ... waitresses suck (not in the good way), decor is nice.

But the thing that surprised me was we were the only ones there. It's September now, shouldn't things be picking up ?

Sophia's Restaurant

Huashan Lu, on the SW corner at Wulumuqi. An elegant four story townhouse divided into quiet private rooms. A Chinese restaurant serving Shanghai/Western fusion (I'm not sure what that means), that was nothing to either boast or complain about. Once the food arrived the waitresses would retire to right outside the door, a nice touch, but at the same time they managed to reappear right on cue to top off our beers and clear the plates. Can't comment on the cost because I wasn't the one hosting, but the consensus of the few reviews I've read is that it's a bit pricey. The service was efficient, the food was adequate. I don't imagine that I'll ever go back.

MyThai in Cloud 9 Mall, it sucked, terrible food but ok service. I love Thai food and have been to 5 in Shanghai, and while I know its not authentic (have been to 3 cities in Thailand) but MyThai was really bad, could not wait to get out of there. They only had 2 kinds of DomYum soup!

Last night we were at Jimix on Beijing Xi Lu - walking distance for everyone who lives at La Doll or City Castle. Quite good Italian with a nice patio and some good pizza at reasonable prices (not like Casa Mia, that has mediocre food at high prices).

Night before: Chicken Commando. Finally a place that has & delivers some nice chicken (1/4, 1/2, 1/1) with fries. Try the Caesar Sauce (which is not a Cesar but a garlic sauce, skip the Thai Sauce which is not good).

Earlier this week went to Le Voyage on Yongjia Lu near XiangYang Lu for the Tues night dinner. SE asian food. Everything was fresh and had a lot of taste. Had a taste of everything just about, and was pretty happy with the meal. Curry's were good, though the yellow as a little sweet. I would go back just for the Chicken Coconut soup. Could have made a meal of the appetizers. Had the leftover spicy noodles for dinner the next day. Overall, really good and I will go back.

Pasti on Beijing lu, looks like it got sold. New name, new decor, headed down the toilet. We should have gone earlier, three months ago it was nice. Sad

DA MARCO near Zhenning lu
The restaurant was booked and full as usual.
My friend and i just sat at the bar, had some red house italian wine and ordered a pizza. Tomato sauce with sausage and blue cheese. (Wanted to try blue cheese in a pizza) It was great!!! Thin crispy crust, with that hint of blue cheese that blended well with the tangy tomato sauce and italian sausage.

Element Fresh, Gubei Garden Plaza

Lying just off the axis of the can't-be-completed-soon-enough No. 10 line, the latest and westernmost addition to the Element Fresh chain is a welcome adjunct to the 'hood, and it did not disappoint. Had the hummus (never enough olives), and the lamb kebob, which arrived cooked rare (without asking), and to tender perfection. And it was all so damn fresh. The decor was dimly lit, warm, minimalist and cozy. My Hubei-born server was on top of her game - she knew the menu and made a good suggestion. I will be be back.

Last night? I ate at a tiny hole in the wall restaurant next to my apartment in the middle of a street market on a no-name alley. It's awesome:

6 RMB buys you almost anything on the menu. They cook right in front of you. They make the noodles right in front of you. It never takes them longer than 5 minutes to bring you your order.

Beef, peppers, and onions, soup, rice, fried noodles and vegetables. Best deal in town I've found so far..

I have no idea how those guys stay in business. Bless their hearts.

There was a story about a year ago of how the current owner of Pasti scammed the German guy who built the restaurant up out of his restaurant. She was one of the shareholders and eventually did one of those Chinese tricks and ended up owning the place. Really sad for the poor guy who put so much work into getting the place going. I would not dream of going anywhere near the place for that reason. Same as Senses and Wine, we have a duty to stay away from some places. They tend to go bust in the end.

Casa 13 was one of my favorite places in town during its first 8 months. We were there 2-3 per month with Rowdee running the place.

Then the food went downhill quite fast; acceptable still but no where near the quality it was previously. Shame as its a beautiful place in a lovely spot...

I agree, Pasti is now a local, shortcut, awful place now. I used to go there when it was under foreign control, now I stay well clear of it. Many many other options to choose from. Forget about Pasti basically, it's a dump.

Wow Sad Thanks for the info ... we knew something was wrong when it was suddenly all different. All nasty-tasting, too.

Sigh.Another one bites the dust. Pasti was pretty darn good.Wish I'd gone there earlier (altho the help was always crap.)

Goya
Guyang lu near Songyuan lu.
Excellent REAL Okinawan food, not faked-for-western-expats like at En in Taikang lu. All the standards. They even have fresh umi-budou, very rare outside Okinawa, even in Japan.
250 kuai for 2 including somewhat expensive Orion beers.
