Post subject: Good Indonesian Restaurants

Being a fan of but not an expert on Indonesian food I was wondering where the best places to eat it are.
I can definitely recommend Bali Bistro close to JingAn Temple.
Bali Laguna is a huge rip-off in my opinion.
What other places do you know about? From low budget 小吃type to the more expensive ones

Bali Bistro gets my vote for authenticity and great value too. I don't think there are many other alternatives to be honest. Only complaint - they don't let you mix the sate. 6 chicken skewers is too much for 2 I'd much prefer say, 3 chicken and 3 lamb but the waiter AND the owner both said it can't be done. Bizarre.

^ Bali Bistro is a distant copy of Indonesian food - its like serving Chung King frozen chicken and saying its authentic Chinese.

There is a new "Indonesian" restaurant in Hongmei walking street with a strange NON Indonesian name. We went there with some Indonesian friends and they didn't recognise most of the menu and when the food came they were also confused with what it's supposed to be. The food is ok nothing special but its NOT Indonesian unless there is a parallel dimension this is from.

There are NO authentic Indonesian food restaurants in Shanghai, none.

Bali Bistro is quite authentic I think... and the price is fair.

Haven't tried the Bali Laguna though because when we phoned the restaurant, they said that they are very expensive, and for Indonesian, they will taste non authentic Smile Appreciate the honesty hehe

^ Are you Indonesian or have you lived in Indonesia?

Bali Bistro is the closest you will get to authentic Indonesian food in Shanghai. I do agree the prices are good as well as the food but falls short of the mark.

Indonesian food is quite complex and the ingredients are specific.

How many Indonesian restaurants can you name of in Shanghai?

So far I only heard of Bali Bistro and Borobudur. The rest I would not even consider them Indonesian food.

Borobudur, I was shocked to see the woman using INDOFOOD packets to cook - I can do that at home.

Day after tomorrow I will be haveing dinner at Garuda Padang Jl Hayam Wuruk, Jakarta. Later I'm going to have some Martabak Manis.

Ahhhhhhhhh

LOL! Laughing

Last week I was joking with my Indonesian friends about opening up a mobile Martabak Manis stand in front of the bars and then began thinking "hey...maybe not so stupid" especially if we also have real bubur ayam and other yummy Indo street food.

I'll be thinking of you guys eating the fake Indo food when I'm enjoying the real stuff. Laughing

Hey Guys, been thinking of you all week here in Jakarta - the food is Sooooooo Good!

Its pathetic that Shanghai cannot even manage a decent Indonesian restaurant. "Better City Better Life" ?? haha should be "Pay More Get Less" Smile

By the way I am staying at Malioboro hotel & spa.

Correct, unfortunately. Because I love Indonesian food. Every now and then I have time to get my fix in Hong Kong. There are a few decent ones.

Hong Kong has so much to offer in good Asian food. Not only excellent quality, but also value for money. And service. I usually stay in the Wanchai area, because it's close to most of my customers in the shipping industry. And there are so many good restaurants concentrated there. I am not familiar with that place in Sheung Wan, but I will check. I am going to be in HK again end of this month. Usually go once every 4 - 6 weeks. Love it!

Do all my 'Drinking' in the wanch! that is my problem, have a pad in Hung Hom, maybe should look at selling that and buying in the Wanch, easier to crawl back home to...

Yeah, The Wanch. Cool place. I usually stay in the Wharney hotel. It's not what it used to be in the early 90's, but still very convenient. Close to the restaurants and bars, close to the MTR island line, close to the ferry terminal in Central. If I am not staying there, I stay with a good mate of mine on Lamma. Would like to go back to HK, and I am working on it. I have seen it here. HK has so much more quality of life.
Lots of people complain about it being so busy, and lots of people everywhere. Yeah, sure it's a bustling place, but it's also so easy to travel for 20 - 30 minutes and be in a quiet place. Ideal combination. Plus stuff simply works there.

Yeah, they raided 4 bars, including my local there, the Island Bar. Still Yung Shue Wan has one of my favourite seafood places in HK. The Man Fung restaurant, first one from the ferry pier. Rumour has it that there's still a lobster there with my name on it, so I better look after that when I go back end of the month Smile
