The article says it is expected that line 7 will carry one million passengers a day. Holy crap. And it also says the entire system transports four million cheery Chinese a day. In a different article I read, it mentioned line 7 will be one of those crappy lines that runs every seven and a half minutes, which, given the apparent importance of the line, ain't to be making much sense to my American ass.
Anyway, shrubberies and saplings have been planted around the new street entrances, and I noticed in the Jingan station, they took down the plywood divider so you can now see the beginning of the new line 7 hall and the tops of the escalators. I asked one the maroon jacketed ladies when it will be ready, and she looked at the new tunnel like she had just noticed it and had no idea what it was. She asked one of her uniformed friends, who said the magic opening date is December 15th. |

Line 8 is pretty new, has a short train length, and runs at these 7.5 minute intervals. Utterly retarded considering the high-volume areas it runs through.
Line 7 gonna be the same, huh? Sweet. Well done. |

The rolling stock for Line 7 is the same as the new trains on Line 9 - which is to say, significantly wider than the trains on Line 8. Should be no issues with capacity. I'd imagine that the 7.5 minutes will be the MAXIMUM headway - rush hour headways will probably be significantly shorter, just as they are on other lines. |

I agree with the French lady boy lover on this one. The Shanghai Metro isn't perfect but it's reliable and cheap and is expanding fast to cover more areas. Compare it to the Crossrail project in London which has taken a millennium to even decide on the route it will take and it's still 10 years before a train will be on the tracks.
There's a lot to bitch about here but I don't think the metro is one of them. |

Get your facts straight before you spout off. He is not after French lady boys. He is obviously after Asian ones since he is over here.
Oh - on the silly part about the subway - yeah you're right. |

Did anyone say anything to the contrary on this thread? |

They've got the big metro sign up at the Changshu Rd. station on the new line 7, and the street is sealed up again, mostly. I guess in a couple of weeks we've got some new transport options. Which other lines are opening this year, and what is the name/location of the next line 7 station south from Changshu Rd.? |

^I think Line 11 and Phase 2 of Line 9 are both planned to open before year end. Line 10 and the two extensions to line 2 are planned to open before the Expo. |

Heard Line 7 opened for trial on Saturday. Has anyone here tried it out? |

As of two days ago, Line 7 was still closed at Jing'an Temple station. |

Line 7 was opened on first week of December, on trial runs from 9am to 4pm only (to avoid the rush hours probably), currently only running between Shanghai University and Hua Mu road in Pudong. I have used it several times (from Jingan Temple). The trains are orange color-themed.
Other times it is physically closed and off-limits, so if you are there during rush hours, it would appear to be still not operational. |

I see that the locals have been going ballistic about the Line 8 problems. Basically, during rush hour and the hours either side, it's literally impossible to board the train at many stations. Apparently, passenger volume is 50% higher than forecast = retarded forecasting balls-up of epic proportions. The metro people have responded by reducing rush hour intervals from 5 to 4 minutes. A good start, but still way short of what is needed. Considering this line serves the Expo sites, they're going to need a shitload more trains very soon.
One other related point - why have they made trains on many of these new lines shorter, and using smaller carriages? Many go through just as many high density areas as Line 1 and Line 2. |

This is the problem on Line 6 which I can walk to since my move across the river. Trains only have 4 carriages and are much narrower than line 1/2. Also the wait between trains is quite long and the congestion is crazy. That said, it's still pretty fast to get into the city, just uncomfortable a lot of the time! |

I had to use line 6 last summer. It's nice. It's like having an air-conditioned tour of Pudong. Plus you can always get a seat. |
