| Post subject: Local Kindergarten on Yi Shan Lu |
I am hoping to reach the parents of the two foreign children I saw at the Nan Fang Kindergarten on Yi Shan Lu across from the No.6 Peoples Hospital inside a local apartment complex. I was hired to teach English on Wednesdays for all the classes. I witnessed abusive behaviour in the 4 classes I taught. The final class I lasted 5 minutes and decided to quit on the basis of what I saw. I did not see anyone hitting the foreign kids, but they are in the presence of teachers pushing, jerking and smacking the other children. I also have had my children in a local kindergarten on Jian Guo Lu and I am positive this has not happened in their school (I've asked my oldest over and over over the years, he's now 7, and he says that never happened at his school). In the U.S. if you behaved this way you would be in jail.
I told the agency who hired me what had happened. I'm not sure if he understood the gravity of the situation. He said he would talk to the principal. I'm not convinced they think it's wrong. |

Still looking. I've had no responses to this very serious issue. Hope to find them. |

Chinese schools don't really buy into the "never touch the children" attitude towards teaching. I worked in a kindergarten on Yishan Lu for a couple of years. It was a good school, very professional and I wouldn't hesitate to send my kids there.
But they certainly expected the students to give complete respect to the teachers and listen to them. If you started screwing around it earned you a tug, smack or a shove in the right direction. The teachers and aids were loving and kind to the kids, but if you stepped out of line you certainly found out about it in a hurry.
In my time there I saw teachers be rough occasionally with the kids that needed it. By "rough" I mean if the kids were unruly, mean or disrespectful to the teachers or other kids then they were punished appropriately. Never saw anything I would call abusive. The harshest thing I ever saw was a teacher's aid come up behind two kids that wouldn't shut up after being told several times. She grasped them by their collars and gently gave their heads a knock together. It didn't hurt them at all but it took them by surprise and shut them up in a hurry. Afterwards she gave them a dressing down about being respectful to the foreign teacher. They didn't give her any trouble for a few days after that. But being kids they eventually forgot about it. |

BTW - I seriously seriously doubt a local teacher would feel comfortable disciplining a foreign kid in the same way. I'm certain foreign students in a Chinese school would eventually have problems with the other students because of a double standard. |

Never the less... I saw what I saw. I have three children of my own and I don't consider their approach as appropriate. They didn't ask or instruct any of the children before smacking them, pushing them or jerking them and shoving them in their seat. That's unacceptable PERIOD! Especially for the really little ones that are 2.5 yrs old.
I believe its systematic and I personally would not want my children in that atmosphere. |

Rucksack - what preschool do you have your children in on Jian Guo Lu? I have just moved there and am looking for something close by (although it is a long rd). We are near Wulumuqi. |

Seems disturbing but may also be an American over-reaction as suggested by the other poster. The school you mention has a good reputation among locals. Unfortunately I do not know anyone who currently have kids there. To reachj a larger audience, you could write a letter to one of the popular paper expat magazines on the subject. Or maybe contact "Shanghai Roots & Shoots" a foreign parent association. |

Perhaps I got the wrong name for that association... They are featured in the current "family, kids" issue one of the expat magazines. |

I'm not sure about the over reaction comment. I've lived here for over 12 years. One son spent 5 years in a local kindergarten, the other is in his second year. BTW I spoke to the headmaster at my son's kindergarten and she was SHOCKED! Smacking children.....is smacking children and in anger is especially terrible.
My sons' school is at 570 Jian Guo Lu near Wu Lu Mu Qi LU. Where they do not push, shove or smack children. |
