| Post subject: Great (Regional) FW? |
Once in awhile, a site is blocked here, but not elsewhere in China. Today for instance, I can't access drupal.org, yet a couple others have said they have no problems.
Just how regional is the firewall? Is Changning slightly more paranoid than Hongqiao? |

Different area's have different blocklists.
They usually get updated at regular intervals, but not all get done at the same time.
Local blocking usually results in dns lookups failing, but its fairly easy to bypass.
(Use someone elses dns... opendns or similar)
Are you sure its blocked, and not network related?
Can you ping drupal.org?
What does a traceroute show?
Usually the evil stuff starts happening around 202.101.63.xx or 202.97.48.xx ranges.
As those are the routers than work for overseas blocks.
I actually have physical access to some of those routers. Should take a photo sometime.
Although if I blinked in that direction, I'd probably be told not to come back |

Request Timed Out.
4 sent, 0 received, 4 lost. Grand total of 100% lost!
My hometown bank is now inaccessible too. |

Of course, you already had a try at restarting your router and DSL modem. Make sure to see if you have any changes to your antivirus program and firewall that might ba problem. You know about putting the IP address in your hosts file. And as Computersolutions said, try working off of a different DNS server. |

A lot of these just disappeared today, so just to get things done, I just used the vpn. Will see how it is later. For now, I've had it with this computer. Been staring at it for 4 days. |

Thanks for trying. I can't from Jing'an and I can't from home
Also, this is suddenly happening - when I try to use any of the dns tool sites, I can go there but if I actually do a traceroute or ping from there,

Shanghaiexpat.com is also very flaky these days.
This could become a royal pain in the ass |

Works as well. Also sometimes even YouTube and twitter work on my connection (my provider IP range is 58.247.xxx.xxx and 58.246.xxx.xxx).
But now China Unicom throttle my download speed from Japan. I wonder why (using some video hosting servers in Japan)?
Speed to US and EU is OK, around 5-10Mbps. Also I've noticed that ping time to US is heavely decreased for last half month from 300-400ms to 130-170ms, now i even able to play online games almost without lags with people from US.

Yeah, the source code to python is politically very sensitive.

Not necessarily. They'll just "block" the toilet. |
