Cotton's, Sasha's and Le Bistro Saliya have decent dining outdoors. Ambience is light, though your opinion of the music may vary accoridng to your tastes. |

Where do old people go? Of course they can go to heaven if they like.
My gf is more than 20 years younger than me. I'm in heaven.... |

I'm very happy for you, but I'm not really looking for a 20 year old girlfriend. Hopefully, neither is my husband. (I am aware that several seem to be looking for him though but he is not presently in the market for an exotic pet.) |

Thanks for the information. It seems to be a nice quiet place. My gf and I will go there tomorrow. Do you have any recommendation on where to eat? A nice local restaurant with history, but not with inflated laowai price will be ideal.
She found that we can buy a bus-admission package deal of 100 RMB per person. The bus will leave SH bus centre at SH Stadium at 8:30 am and return in the evening. At this moment there are still 35 or so tickets remaining. The bus centre's phone number is 6426 5555.
Another option is to drive or take the subway line 1, then switch to a bus as bellow.

I think you might like this newer place called Brick. It's a restaurant/wine bar and it doesn't have the density of packed Friday nights at JZ and the suffocating secondhand smoke, but it has live Jazz music almost every night. It's one of my favorite places to go now. The atmosphere is romantic: dark lighting and brick walls (hence the name) and it makes you think of Shanghai in the 20's. On Saturday night there is a really good duo - a piano player and singer. The girl sometimes sings classic Jazz songs or other stuff (Brazilian, Spanish) that she has translated into Chinese. She has a lovely voice and it's really an enjoyable show to watch. Oh, and the wine is very affordable. You can get a bottle of red for as low as 80kuai and it's not bad. I highly recommend this place.
Brick.... it's near Huai Huai lu. |

if the weather is nice this month you should go to the patio at the fat olive. Good wine selection, very chill crowd, good view, nice place to relax. |

I went to JZ last night for the first time. Handsome Husband is out of town so went with a girlfriend. Very nice, liked it a lot. Will definitely be going back with HH again soon.
Also we have taken a liking to the Vue bar at Hyatt on the Bund. Might not be the 'hippest' night spot but the view really can't be beat and it's a pleasant enough place to have a few cocktails. Have been to the Glamour Bar a couple times as well. Because you know, sometimes you just need a bit of glam. |

I dunno, we went to go there once on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, I think it might have been late August or early Sept, and it was weird. It seemed very 'Eurotrashy'. There was hip hop music blaring and everyone there seemed to be lolling about like they were in some sort of blingy music video. It was a very strange (to me) vibe, like "look at us, the beautiful people, we're here". Maybe that was a one-off event or something but it put me off the place. |

But old people are chewy. I would prefer young, tender and sweet meet...
As for Fengjing (枫泾), it was wonderful. We went there last Sunday on a package tour. There were so few tourists yet there are more than enough interesting places to look around in a day. It was very relaxing. The Chinese Farmer-Painter Village was also very near. It also had a small, but free adventure playground. I highly recommend it. |

Hi klick,
My wife and I are at the tail end of our thirties, big 40 for me next year, and we would say:
abbey road (they have a beatles tribute band on there from time to time and the foods good).
jz club, house of blues and jazz, bar rouge, glamour bar, cottons, vue bar, cotton club, barbarossa, blarney stone for a good pub, velvet lounge (if you want to dance, music not boom boom boom, more funky), they are all good.
melting pot on hengshan lu
logo bar if you feel like you want some good music and don't mind a nice dive bar, just don't dress up
the bar at the hyatt, think its on 93 rd floor, was there last week to see Carlton Smith soul band, he was good
time passage is also good, nice atmopshere and live music
pomegranate for live music, 50 yds from logo and more classy
o'malleys for their comedy nights (they have one coming up in January)
not been to brown sugar, enoteca, cabaret or the new Chinatown Burlesque club yet but they all do live music
Bunch of us heading to Dream Factory this Saturday to watch the Lions of Puxi gig if you want to come along. The Lions are a reggae band who also performed at the JZ music festival last month. Not been to this venue before, but everyone I know who has, recommends it.
Yuyingtang in hongqiao does not sound like your scene, its a dive live music club, but if you want to shake and sweat, and not be surrounded by expat posers, then its the place to go.
Beedees on dagu lu for live music was not bad, but only been there once.
I would not recommend the Bund Brewery, granted only been once, but food was crap, and the beer was not that good either
I know you said you weren't looking for restaurants, but Citizen cafe does a mean Fillet Mignon, its the dogs bollocks as us brits would say, and itsuki teppanyaki on donghu lu does a good 150 rmb all you can eat and drink deal. pay 15 quid, get stuffed and oiled up, then head on out to a club somewhere, top night.
cheers, jase |

ps, if either you or HH play Texas Hold Em All Poker, we have a monthly poker night of about 8 of us, all pretty chilled, 200rmb buy in, none of us great at poker, but all of us very good at taking the piss out of each other, lads and lasses are welcome. |

I don't like JZ Club one little bit.
Awful drinks and I don't get why anyone would go there for the 'music'. |

Well, you know. Diff'rent strokes, diff'rent folks and all that. I have only been the once and had a great time. I had red wine which was not spectacular bot not awful either, and the music was some very good latin jazz which I much enjoyed. So, clearly, my experience at least for this one occasion is much better than what you have had. Who knows, I may go again and find I don't like it, but I did have a really good time that once and so I have nothing bad to say about the joint. |

Last time I went they put dark rum in a Long Island Iced Tea. They had no rum suitable for making a Daiquiri (e.g. Havana Club), and they were using bottled sour mix. The bar staff can't really make drinks so yeah, stick to beer or wine and you're probably OK.
The music was latin jazz the night I went if I remember right. Specifically was that kind of modern (60s style?) Cuban jazz. Awful stuff. No obvious tune, just a bunch of egomaniacs being really boring and long winded at full blast. I just can't appreciate that style of music, but obviously some people like it. |

unfortunately, I would agree about the drinks at JZ club, the last time we went there my wife had a long island iced tea and either it was spiked, or they used really dodgy alcohol as she was completely wasted (like eyes rolling back and couldn't stand up) after just one drink. |

I was in JZ when Coco had a show there. The bar was full of guys, unfortunately, gays. We had wine... it was so so. I haven't been there still then |
