Post subject: Any suggestion on which GPS to get?

I just bought a car off my colleague, and really in need of a GPS. Any suggestion on which brand to get? I am looking for something that is around $1.2k, and updated maps.

What is going to set you back is the ENGLISH map you will need to get unless you can read Chinese.

1.2k is far too cheap you will need to spend about 2.5k for a decent one. I got a Garmin for about that WITH the English China map (about 600rmb) and I still think I went too cheap. One thing that screws you up is the elevated highways - the GPS sometimes cannot determine if you above or below Yan'an lu. Plus the satellite reception around the buildings and elevated highways is poor which leads to positioning errors.

A feature that is very usefull and not found on cheaper models is TRACKING where you can save the path you are driving manually from point A to B and recall it for future reference. The suggested path the GPS gives you can be quite stupid and a tracking feature can be useful if you take the GPS in a taxi (you won't be driving all the time).

Also about driving here - keep a watch out for pedestrians and bicycles (electric bikes too) if you hit on no matter if they jumped out in front of you its your fault, by law. Motorcycles and gas scooters are treated same as you so if its their fault you can sue them... good luck on that one!

Thanks for the post. I can read Chinese, so map is not too much of a problem. Ok i will look for something with tracking and ask about the elevation issues. Driving here seems to be a bit of a pain for me right now, hopefully i can get use to it.

I bought the Newsmy Q1TV. It works pretty good. Has all the functions of any GPS I've seen.

Should cost about 1200 - 1400 rmb.
No English map available as far as I can tell.
Plays movies, ebooks, and mp3s. Also has a digital tv receiver. Takes SD cards for more storage. It is a touchscreen model with a bright clear screen.
