I reckon you'll be struggling to get it done here. MAYBE at that indoor ski joint they have, or MAYBE at Decathlon (they sell some skis there), but if possible, i'd wait until you get to the resort.

Is it even worth taking your own skis on the plane up to Beijing? If you've ski'd before you'll be a bit bored after about 3 runs at Nanshan. Maybe after 1 run. Ha.

Has anybody seen "Push", the crazy ski movie from a few years back? Where were they skiing in China? That looked pretty good.

I've taken my own skis and boots to Urumqi a couple of times. They have good equipment there, but i don't want to share boots with some skanky tinea infected foot that's not my own.

have experienced the joy of hiring ski boots many years ago in Europe and never again. the company we are thinking of using is www.iconx.us and might go boarding instead as the hire of burton/sant cruz boards and boots/bindings is included in the price.

crivens - when did you go to nanshan ? was it really that bad ?

will check out decathalon. don't recall any skis for sale there, but will have another look.

Went to Nanshan a couple of years ago. Just had a look at the piste map again and it doesn't look as if it's changed much. It's really only one hill and not challenging for anyone that's ski'ed before. The steepest part of the hill takes about 30 seconds to ski down and then you are on a fairly shallow hill after that. It's OK for a one day fix if you really need to. If you are snow boarding and practising tricks etc then it's fine for practice.

If you are going for more than one day and have the time and really want to ski in China I'd recommend Yabuli up near Harbin. Again, not fantastic compared to Europe USA or even Scotland but enough to give you a bigger fix.

If you are going to fly for a few hours you may as well go to Japan or Korea.

cheers for advice, am missing my snow fix so a weekend away at the moment is OK.

the trips with iconx are depart thursday night, 2 half days and 1 full day ski, then return on sunday night.

where did you get the nanshan piste map ? i had a look on www.nanshanski.com but couldn't find it

sounds to me like I should go boarding instead as i'm a beginner at that, but have skied for 10 years.

iconx aren't doing any trips to Yabuli until New Year's Eve and CNY, I used them for recent surfing trip to Sanya and they were OK.

Japan is top of my list, but wife doesn't ski or board so difficult to go away for a week when holidays are limited and it's bloody expensive getting to Sapporo. whereabouts in Korea have you been ?

have you skied in scotland ? where are you from ?

Map here:

http://www.nanshanski.com/web_en/images/地图.jpg

Everything on the map is beginners except for the little black line on the top left and as I said you're down that bit in about 30 seconds.

Yeah - skied lots in Scotland when I was growing up - from Edinburgh - many bad memories of standing on an ice mountain in Aviemore or Glenshee in blowing gale force winds freezing my nuts off as a 12yr old wondering what I was doing there with all the other nutters in our 20yr old leg-breaker school skis from the 1950's, woolly gloves and crappy orange kagouls.

It wasn't until I went skiing in Europe that I realised skiing can actually be pleasurable!

thanks for link, unfortunately can't get the image to work, oh well, the 7 of us booked and paid for the trip to nanshan this weekend, so will see what it's like when we get there.

we also went to the indoor ski place yesterday, poor equipment but that's what we expected, but OK for a laugh and if you are just starting to learn.
