Post subject: respectable hair salon

Any one know of a decent hair salon (for highlights, etc.)? Also, reasonably priced would be good. In my neighborhood there is a glut of salons but when I look at the stylists' hair, there is no way I would trust them with my head!

I also dont trust Chinese hair salon here. Last time my friend had her hair cut, she cried for almost 2 days and 2 nights after that.

I would suggest you to go to International hair salon or Japanese hair salon. In Shanghai have several of them. They r a bit pricy but it's better u pay a bit more money than have to regret forever.

There's Toni and Guy Salon in Times Square. I've just had my hair cut last weekend. They have diff prices for the hair stylists, you can choose whic one u want. There's a guy form UK called Michael 320rmb. If you want to do highlight it's start at 600rmb for half head and so on. U can call them up first and checked the number is 53513606.

spicy_chilli - thanks for that info. Where abouts in Times Square is this salon? I live near there but have never noticed it...is it in the shopping mall area or the serviced apartment area?

Also, do they speak english at this salon when trying to make a reservation?

That's a lot of money. SUNBIRD in Huaihai Rd is not bad. Joey (girl) doesn't speak much English, but she's helpful and eager to please, cuts very well, and will cost 85 RMB. Zen Salon at Carrefour is good too.

I went to "Hair Culture" near Huai Hai Lu. A lot of people reccomended it on this site. My husband loved it.... I'm still not sure!!!! I shouldn't complain.... They speak a little english and did exactly what I told them to do!!!
I have really curly hair and I don't cut it straight at the bottom, so I asked for layers ONLY at the VERY bottom and that's exactly what they did..... However the type of layers is the "chinese thin hair type"
They only did it at the very bottom though.... You wouldn't notice with curly hair, so it wasn't THAT BAD FOR ME....You can only see it if I blow dry my hair..... If I had straight hair and wanted layers I would be crying!!!

Does anybody know where can you get REAL layers without them chopping your hair off?????

How about trying Wang Lei Image Commune at the Raffles City. Very patient folks and took time to explain everything I asked. They use Kerastase hair products - the very reason why I chose them. Reasonable prices for a salon located at a prime venue. I also have a few friends who go to them, no complains so far.

But hair cut/styling being a private sphere, I still think it is important to feel comfortable with whoever you're entrusting your precious hair to. A particular stylist may work for some but not all. I had that experience in the UK, and end up moaning even today, haha!

Last time I was in town, i went to Tiffanny (NOT the one we all know about) but a hair dresser place in Xujia hui, underground, right on the entrance to the Grand Mall, the hair dressers there are quite fantastic.

i've tried wang lei (raffles city), exy (isetan), esprit salon (citic sq), and salon h (citic sq).

wang lei: ok, but nothing creative or really outstanding. comfortably stylish.

exy: good for japanese style hair cuts, esp if you are looking for a perm. i recommend this place.

salon esprit: a factory churning out mediocore haircuts at expensive prices. pretentious, and impersonal.

salon h: excellent place if you like something more creative, individualistic. they did not always get it wrong....for example: the guy washing my hair got water all over my face....but he was sweet and gave me a 30 min massage.

tiffany: i've heard it's reliable. ok if you just want a trim etc.

my next shot: eric, or maybe one of those japanese places in gubei.
basically, i find salons opened by japanese or headed by japanese reliable. but i will pay for the head local stylist because i think the premium for a japanese hairstylist lies in not only his/her talent but also largely due to the nationality (demand exceeeds supply). but it's probably a lot more competitive to be a top local stylist, and the price is significantly lower.

expect to pay 500 for a color job (with highlights) at salon h and 200 for a basic hair cut. at the other places, prices vary from 200 to 400 for a haircut.

had my hair colored at toni and guy last weekend. the girl speaks excellent english, she's from s'pore i think. she is THE COLORIST, does nothing else but, and apparently quite well known within the expat circles. anyway, she treats it like a science, very careful, will discuss with you at length before she begins. did a very good job.

bellabella,
Some of the people speak english, Jason doesnt but he is the greatest! Its located across the street to Starbucks in that small alley before you get to the street that runs into the school SCIS. I dont have the address but its easy to find if you walk it will be on your right hand side. They have been there for many years.. take care and good luck
