The ancient buildings are the best part of this city, everything build after 1990 looks like Lego building, with a lot of kitsch and bad taste to make bricks stick together. |

So so wrong....The ancient buildingd in Shanghai are old , lacking charm..reminds me of all the old apts in Paris with their extra small rooms and leaky pipes and really foul ordors.....The sooner they rebuild Shanghai and Paris the Better.. |

^ i think the old buildings in shanghai look nice from the outside. gives the place some character and sense of history. yeah, lots are probably torn up inside, but how about just some remodeling?
i think some of the (relatively) newer places are just terrible. was riding a taxi around hongqiao area yesterday to get to bubba's bbq and went past an area filled with cookie-cutter pink apt buildings. they had the large bricks in alternating pattern lining each of the buildings' 4 corners to give them a more refined look. upon closer inspection, i discovered that these were not interlaced bricks, but painted rectangles made to look like bricks. all i can do is shake my head... |

We are strange, but China is unlike the West in ways that it is really hard to comprehend before arriving here. That said, I really like China. I love the differences, everyone has been really nice. I just want to know if I can toss my tampons and toilet tissue in the toilet in MY OWN HOME without flooding the spot. |

For me the only really bizarre Chinese cultural practice is ....
Talking on cell phones while shitting.
I mean really, I know you wanna do business 24/7, but is it really gonna help you with your pitch if you're like, "OK, I can ship you those 5,000 units in another .... nnnnnn!.... in .... NNN!!!! **PLOP*** ... in another week. If you need them in a week, it'll be 4RMB per unit ... hello? hello?"
I guess the texting I can understand, but who wants to hear a nature documentary on modern fecal expulsion practices while talking on the phone? I don't.
When I moved into my new apartment on the weekend, I noticed there was only one land-line phone jack installed, directly above the toilet.
I just don't get it. |

uh...this is not particular to the chinese. my US office has people who do this all the time. some people even take their laptops in the stall with them. even some high-end hotels have phones installed in the bathroom next to the toilet. |

Watch out for nrgfink when you use the bathroom!
I've heard "them" doing this. (Always speaking Chinese, so I assume it to be "them"!)
It's just China. |
