Post subject: Here I am

So for the two remaining weks I have left, what are the absolute 'must dos' in Shanghai? The things that you could not possibly imagine anyone ignoring while here? Smile

Must do's ... I guess it depends on what you have done and what your interests are ... anyway,

Go to the garden in Yu Garden. Not the shopping area surrounding it, but the actual garden. It is lovely and suprisingly peaceful.

Eat crab dumplings at the restaurant near the crooked bridge in Yu Garden (not in the garden part and not the teahouse in the center ... look for the long line of people. Go to the third floor).

Pick up tons of fakes and impress your friends at Xiang Yang market.

Have a champagne-filled Sunday brunch

Have a drink in the bar on the top of the Jin Mao bulding in Pudong (billed as the highest bar in the world)

Stroll the Bund from both the Puxi and Pudong sides

Arm yourself with a road map or a taxi card and walk aimlessly through the former French Concession. Best done on a nice day. Explore the smaller streets.

Go to a park in the early evening and enjoy the ballroom dancing. Xu Hui park is a good place to see it.

Get a foot massage

Get your hair washed at a "normal" hair washing establishment

Walk Nanjing Road from the Bund to the Portman (takes about 1 hour without stopping). Lots of interesting things to see.

Go to the Shanghai Museum in People's Square (the round building that looks like it has horseshoes on top).

Have a drink and listen to the jazz band at the Peace hotel.

Take a boat cruise up/down the Huangpu River. Don't do one of the dinner ones. Just a normal, during the day ones.

Visit the fabric market at Dong Jia Du Road and Zhong Shan Road. Can even have things made if the creative side emerges.

Take in an acrobatic show. Nightly at 7:30 at Shanghai Centre.

Eat hot pot. More than once.

Avoid travel outside of the city during the October holiday (1-7) because everything will be jammed.

Dining and drinking options ... too many to list. Let us know if you want some recommendations.

Magnolia: that is a great list. I've been here 3 years and I agree with every one of your recommendations.

Magnolia,

I'm surprised you didn't mention more shopping venues. Isn't that what girls love to do above all things? I was told to go to XuJiaHui and XinTianDi to check out the shopping centers. My girlfriend has nagged me about a number of items you wanted. Oh I remember the crab dumplings at the restaurant near the crooked bridge (JiouQuQiao). It's the best! I used to go there with my friends on sundays just to eat that. I really didn't like Yu Garden (I was a kid and didn't appreciate historical stuff). Speaking of the line at that restaurant back then people didn't believe in waiting in line. Everyone just crowd around the reception desk. Whoever got the attention of the receptionist got a table. It was chaotic.
