| Post subject: Will my ATM card and cell phone work in Thailand? |
I´m just wondering - we´re going to Phuket. We have ATM cards from a german bank and cell phones/SIM cards for China - will they work in Thailand?
Are there other possibilities for getting cash there, or do we need to bring it all with? And do they want RMB
Thanks much! |

You can only use RMB in hk and china. If you ATM card has either the cirrus or plus, you can withdraw cash from those machines with these signs. You can use your cell phone, only if you have international roaming with your cell phone account/sim. |

The cell phones will work, but it may also depend on your type of service within China. You may not be able to make/receive calls when out of China. But you may be able to pick up some Thai SIM cards and have some credits added that will get you through the trip. I have to do that when I go to HK ... Not sure why, exactly. I can place and receive international calls when in China, but not from outside. |

mag,
you can register with your cell phone service provider for international roaming service, then you can call and receive calls anywhere you go. |

But don't I have to change my phone number then? Someone told me that I would and that seemed like it would be difficult ...
If I don't have to change my number then do you know where to register? Will it require the signature of a local?
My friend set up my mobile when I first got here ... |

1. yes you can use nearly every bank card in thailand... esp places like krabi, phuket, bkk etc.
2. your cellphone you can probably use (except a CDMA or a 'little smart' phone), the china simcard not. unless you organise international roaming which is very expensive. just buy a new simcard at the airport in thailand when you arrive. the one i use is '123 call' and once you the simcard you can recharge it at nearly every 7-11. ofcourse there are others, the telecom market or is more advanced than here.
questions answered... any more help needed? just ask... |

For your ATM and phone you should check before you go- the ATMs are part of international networks such as Cirrus, etc. The telephone systems in Thailand are GSM, so should be no problem- but ensure your local service has roaming activated. Otherwise, as others mentioned, you can easily pick up a local SIM card in Thailand for emergencies.
As far as bringing over money is concerned, best place to change your cash is at the airport- though there are exchange booths scattered about Patong and other beaches. |
