Post subject: Dressing the family for winter

I have booked a pre-relocation visit to Shanghai for the family in Jan 05. Where we live it is the middle of summer (shorts, tshirts and thongs). Obviously the climate is going to be the total opposite in Shanghai in January.

Some advice about clothing and the weather would be appreciated. Can I expect much rain? (umbrellas, raincoats or both??). How cold outside? (thick jumpers, thermal underwear, heavy over-coats??). What about inside? If we rug up too much against the cold will be sweat inside in air-conditioned shops and hotels??

Love lots of feedback...

Unfortunately, you will need thick clothing, thermal underwear and other winter stuff like like lip balm and lotion. Yes you will sweat when indoors but there's nothing we can do about that. Some supermarkets have free lockers where you can store your thick clothing while shopping. I've seen some malls that have it too.
It rained lastnight but not heavy downpour. If you have children then maybe bring thier raincoats. I've been here 2 months and it has only rained twice.
It's stange because the weather has been mild so far. But today is REALLY cold. My two year old son refuses to play outdoors.
Hey... have a safe trip to shanghai.

You’re not coming to the last wilderness frontier, so relax. For weather conditions, simply look on the Internet and you will be able to find temperatures and rain fall by month. As for clothing, the key is to dress in layers, adding or removing as required. If you forget something, clothes, gloves, umbrellas are very inexpensive in Shanghai. Relax and enjoy your trip.

This is a website that will provide more weather data about Shanghai than you will want or need to know:

haha... shmspac is absolutely right. BUT... you must be ultra-ready if travelling with kids. since you live in a warm country, the change in weather may be a bit harsh for them. bring some cold medicine as well.

Thanks for the tips. We have tried to go shopping but there don't seem to be any winter clothes available at the moment. SUmmer has just started here and no winter clothes are available. Is it easy to have clothes made once we arrive?

We managed to buy some long winter jackets for everyone. Good walking shoes as well, plus thick socks. What about hats and scarves, do we need these?

I hope you meant padded down jackets. Then you will only need a cotton sweatshirt and a thin wool cardigan or something. So that you can take off the big jacket when you are indoor and not get sweaty. Yes, dress in layers is the key!

Gloves are nice to have in January but you won't kick yourself if you don't bring along with you, since they cost only US$1/pair!

It was freezing. One degree most days. The wind was worse than the cold. I did not mind it too much as it was nice to rug up in jackets and there are lots of trendy scarves on sale. Warm jackets are quite cheap and so are gloves, scarves, hats etc. Just really need enough to keep you going until you can make it to the shops. Nothing in bigger sizes so bring your own if you arent shaped like a BEAN POLE.
