Post subject: 802.11 G in Shanghai?

Hi,

Just wondering: Back in the USA, 802.11 B with 11MB was standard and although some devices were coming out offering the new 802.11 G 54 Mb, the infrastructure was not up to that speed yet. That was in 2002.

This being China and its access to and implementation of newer technologies, I was wondering if anyone knows if 802.11 G capacity really exists in the free Wi-fi accesspoints in some of the coffee shops, like Starbucks.

I have found that Starbucks has Wi-fi but not sure if it's the G technology or B technology, and I would hate to by a 802.11 G wireless pc card which are more expensive.

Thanks for any info you may have.

Yes G is here in China, I use it at home and work. You can check if you are using B or G by the netorkwork speed; 11mbps=B and 54kmbps=G. Places like Starbucks might still be using B as it limits users download speed and rations it out amoungest all the users. Also their Firewall can be set to put an upper limit on the down load speed of a users, again to ration the availble bandwidth to all users.

The cost of a B and C card for your laptop is more or less the same. With a G card you can use B and G, with a B card you wont be able to use G. So go for the G card at its extra 30-40rmb, its worth the money.

Great feedback Interested_66. I will make the investment and since it's free to use, it's investment pays off rather quickly.

Thanks again Smile

If you have anyother questions on Computer Subject PM and I will answer them. I will tell you that you cant buy the latest equipment here in Shanghai, the market is about 12-9months behind the UK. A lot of computer equpment is made in China, but you cant buy it here. The technology is not licenced for sale here in China. I sometimes think that China is the last sale point of a great deal of equpment, when an item is replaced with a new model in the west, the old model is sold off here.

Topend Laptops are very expensive here, you buy the latest moble in the US before you travel here, that might have a WiFi card built in.
