Post subject: playing chess

One of my friends who has just arrived here is looking for a club where her son (9) could play chess. He used to play back home and go to tournaments. Are there any clubs in Shanghai for chess players?

He should try to learn Chinese chess and play with the locals here. Chinese chess is quite enjoyable, although it's quite different. Same concept however.

Smile Hi Bursa,

My son just turned 13 but he loves to play chess. He played for three years in school tournaments in Europe. Maybe they can play together some time?

Bye, Evie

Chinese chess issimilar to international chess. I suggest weiqi-go. It is very helpful to multiply your child's intelligence.

For chess in shanghai:
There is a school at
40 Maoming Road North
tel: 62720795
(上海茂名北路40号上海林峰国际象棋培训学校)

Or you can get some information online
http://www.linta.net/ (based in Shanghai)

Or you can play chess online by installation some games tools from:
http://www.ourgame.com/
http://www.chinagames.net/
......
A lot of such websites with thousands of players online all the time.
I often be there for Weiqi-go and Majiang.

Idea Hi Zhw7,
Thanks for the tip. My son is already playing chess on line. But I don't want him behind the computer all the time.
Maybe I'll be able to get him interested in Chinese Chess too.

So thanks for the adress, have a nice day. Please get out of that depressing location! Bye, Evie.

Are there any weiqi places that welcome westerners? I played with a chinese guy back home... Currently I'm playing online. However, its not the same as playing with someone in person! I'm not very good, but its alot of fun!

Regards, Matthew

I have a 10 year old boy who is into chess, and also learned Chinese chess here. He is starting to learn go as well by playing with computer although I do not prefer he spends too much time in front of the screen. I live near Gubei/hongqiao, so if any of you are planning some games for the kids, please let me know too. We can gather over a nice weekend on the west side if anyone is interested. my contact lixx0191@yahoo.com

thanks for the address. Finally my friend is taking her son to a club in Pudong. He is the only westerner, but he is enjoying it. He even went to a school tournament last week on Maoming road. He doesn't speak Chinese but I think he soon will be able to.
