OK just a quick tip for you both then. If you look in an English dictionary you will not find the word "wanna". There, I have helped you improve already |

You seem to be a good girl Nathalie. And your email address "warmspring" is nice too. Mine is bubblebath@hotmail.com. What kind of advice do you really want from this forum? Maybe you should find a language exchange partner or something (post an ad in the appropriate section)? Otherwise just participating in the forum can be useful too. |

Natalie, what makes you think that Lauri isn't serious? And just in case of any confusion "a yank" means an American so she is a native speaker. |

hehe, I wonder what would happen if you wrote a report or memo and used slang words like wanna, gonna etc... as well as LOL, FYI, IMAO...
The point is, native speakers know (or most of them) when it is appropriate to use these slangs etc... but if your trying to improve your english and start using slang, you might get lost and confused and assume its okay to use them all the time! |

Nathalie, if you do want to improve your English, please donot put the hope on the other people, even the native speakers. All you can rely on is yourslef.
Just my advices,
1. Spend more time on reciting the new words in order to get hold of a large vocabulary, I know this is a boring-to-death job to do, but your English will always be staying in the original situation if without that basic.
2. Post here as much as you can, even though you donot understand what they are talking about, never mind, just post.your view of point frankly and directly, but make sure to skip the racist's aggressive words when you are unable to handle it.
3. Speak in English in any cases. If there is a native speaker who can talk with you with correcting your pronunciation, it is fine. Case not, try to find someone who has the same interest in practising the oral English to speak to.
4. I think VOA does helps a lot in the listening. You can download some of them when at home, and listen to it as much as you can. Keeping doing that, you will find it easy to catch someone during a conversation.
Oh, the last also the most important thing is: Watch American soap opera like <Friends>!!!!!! Watch and Enjoy it!!!! If you would like to understand what people say all the time much better, learning some American slangs is quite necessary. And the people here use the American slangs frequently.
Well, hope my crap does help you in some ways........ |

I totally agree with lemongrass, but I must warn you about watching sitcoms etc...(friends, sex in the city). Yes, it is true that you can learn a lot from them, as it gives you a good idea of the talking speed and just overall crap friends in commom might talk about in the States, but remember it is a TV show and please, do not get obsessed with every single expression they use, a lot of it is slang and one of the main problems I see with chinese trying to learn slang is that even though they understand the meaning of it, they are not aware of when is the best time to use it! The atmosphere and place does play a big part in when to use appropriate slang.
Just my 2 cents! |

dalc87, I see what you mean. Thanks for your reminder but what you worry about is ok for me. As I never use a slang if I donot know the exact meaning of it. I believe people will be annoyed if you speak out a slang in the wrong occasion.
Surely <friends> is only TV, not life. I am not 12 years old who believes everything from TV shows. But I do like the humor and friendship that these guys showed. yeah, they crack me up all the time and I enjoy watching it. |
