Post subject: Antique pipes

Hello, I've taken an interest in the antique opiumn pipes, which can be found at most antique markets.
Can anyone tell me: Where to find a good selection?
How to recognize fakes (there are a lot, but some are obviously more fake-looking than others)?
How to recognize origin or age of pipe?
Whether I can take it out of the country?
And what a fair price would be?
I talked to one owner who was asking 2600RMB. When I scoffed and walked away, he didn't even bother to chase me or make a lower offer, leading me to believe that he definitely knew the market.

Would try to search what's available on eBay and get some references from there....this could be a starting point. Interesting hobby... Smile

e bay is full of fakes, there are very good antique sites of genuine antiques ,but sorry i am loath to give them out>
the chances off finding anything antique is slim, and the prices are much better in the west>
the chinese are getting into collecting ,big style and they are just throwing money at the sellers, hence the price has risen substantially
.I would like to know where in Shanghai you were.I
<ll give you an example ,my friend has an antique shop back home, has been in the business 40 years, one of the old school, anyway, just before i left he showed my a cute lighter,it cost him 15 quid,I saw the same lighter in shanghai and the guy said 3000rmb and didn,t blink an eyelid>
The best solution is because you are interested in an area that is easily faked,is to buy up as many books as you can ,because if you don,t you will be solely burnt
.Another and more interesting ,is to head down to Yunnan, myebe cross into laos, mix with the villagers ,it is still possible to get an antique pipe off a real pipe smoker if you are lucky
.ps the exhibition at the Shanghai museum is top quality,go and see it ,never mind the crowds
