| Post subject: Web hosting |
Hey there,
are there any web sites offering free web hosting in China? I used to run a personal website back in Europe, but unfortunately it can't be accessed from China. Besides, given the low transfer speeds experienced in Shanghai (at least from where I work), uploading photos etc. takes much too long. Thus, I'm looking for a closer alternative but I haven't found anything so far using google.

There are always the free services but considering the cost of a professional service it is easy to notice quality is directly related to price i.e. free hosting sucks.
Send a PM to Michael, am sure he can help you. I know he hosts quite a lot of sites already under a similar platform as this website, at very competitive prices.
Hope helps. |

Cheers for the reply! I'll continue looking for a free alternativ for a little while longer, but your suggestion sounds like a good solution. But free isn't always bad - I've had a very good experience using a Swedish service called Spray (pretty much the same as Tripod, just a Swedish language version of it). 50 Mb for free, and you can create several accounts if you need more. The ads are text-based, so they don't take up too much space or visitor bandwidth. Unfortunately it, like most web hotels, is blocked in China... |

The blocking here is just plain wierd. Internet from China to the rest of the world just sucks -- its slow, and lots of sites are blocked that has absolutely nothing sensitive on the site. For example, sourceforge appears to be blocked!
That being said, its easy to find a proxy that will let you access everything, albeit slowly.

I always hear that sourceforge is blocked, and yet I download stuff from it almost weekly. When you say that it "appears to be blocked", what exactly do you mean?
I'm with you 100% though, that the blocking here is weird. |

Its not always a blocking issue. Sometimes is an overworked DNS issue. It might vary from area to area within the same city. I can access sourceforge, for instance.
I think they have a thing about software in some cases also.. like they block the use and downloading of proxy software. |

What I mean by blocked is that I cannot access the site (timeout). However, when I use a proxy it works like a charm. Its possible, however, that its a DNS issue like you say. The DNS servers seem to be pretty flaky and go and off with no rhyme or reason

Currently I cannot access www.sourceforge.com without a proxy. However, the problem as you suggested does appear to be DNS. An nslookup of the name fails The DNS server is dns.guangzhou.gd.cn.

What are you looking to do with a web site and how large a site will you have? I have some space on mine I'd let you squat on free of charge. I am in the process of rebuilding my site, www.ourlifeinchina.com and am making some room for some of my pals and fellow expats to post their experiences and photos from China on. If you are interested let me know and I'll see what I can do for you.
Actually if any of you want a small space of web land to post your experiences on let me know, and I'll hook you up. |

I can open Spray.se but it is extremely slow.. why don't u try Passagen.se then? They have 20Mb for free.. supports FTP. You just need to have a Swedish cell phone number to register there in order to activate your account. Passagen can be loaded in China.. a lot faster than Spray.. but the upload speed is a bit slow.. |
