| Post subject: Everything lost on C drive. |
Turned my computer on the other day and it shows a different screensaver and the start thing is looking different. Go to check my email on Outlook Express and all my email accounts have been removed.
I check Outlook and the email account I have there has disappeared along with all the email history I had stored on there. All contacts and everything on Outlook gone which is a major pisser.
I check around realise that the C drive has been erased of everything.
All the stuff on my D and E drives are still there.
I now cannot load my email account onto Outlook. It just won't work and the host has changed the passwords and user name etc.
If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it as it is majorly pissing me off. |

Were you using your computer? Or it was someone else's and you were too drunk...
I haven't heard a virus that could do that, but again, I don't use windows at home. Did you download and/or open any suspicious file? It could be a script in Outlook that done those. |

People were tallking about that MSN file virus being nasty to local files. ...Something has obviously erased big chunks of your drive and its not even likely you could do this even if you wanted to accidentally . It looks like the deletions were selective.
It could not have got everything if you can open Outlook to see your accounts are not there.
You are not in safe mode - right?
At this point if all that is truly gone, I think your only option is reformat the drive and a reinstall of Windows and all your programs. Hopefully you backed your critical files.
When you reinstall.. have a good battery of virus and worm programs ready to go on first and scan your other drives. |

yikes, don't touch your computer.... deleted files can be recovered, though not if the files been overwritten.
recovery is probably beyond windows at this point, there are recovery utilities available. find one (i don't know where in shanghai) and run it off of your CDROM drive...
do not copy it onto your pc. do not do any work on your pc if you would like to recover the old items.

Actually, you have other option. Install Linux and you'll be free from those nasty worms and viruses. |

ok i have some software that could/may be able to help you with this... as the info may still be held within sectors on your harddisk, however if you have used your computer in anyway, whther you have used the net, open or closed programs or files then it could be that the data has been written over already... ias i say i can help.. but please note that it will take a hell of a long time to try to rescue anything already deleted, and it sounds as though you have picked up a nice lil virus of one form or another...
PM me if ya wanna give it a shot... also have you scanned your computer using a bootable virus scanning FDD/CD/DVD? |

Yes, I have software that will do that, and have offered to do the work for him free. On condition the computer isn't turned on again until the work is done.
But the fact that you're writing this, MMM, indicates that you've been using your computer, against strict instructions from me.

It seemed you had moved your profile data by accident. On your system drive, you can find a directory named Documents and Settings. Your profile data include desktop & email accounting is put in the directory in a subfolder with your login name. If you drag it to somewhere else, the system will use the default profile next time you log in. So everything is changed as you described. If you find that directory and drag it back, everthing will be fine. |

Yep, it could be profile data. But that would not explain the missing files in C drive. Could be a trojan tat allowed someone in and created a mess for you. Are you on broadband and do you have a firewall? Anyway the best recovery software out there is called R-studio. I recovered 100GB of data once. Only lost 1 file in the end. PM me if you need my help. Do not use this drive further! the more you use it the harder it is to get your files back. |
