Arguably the greatest film-score composer ever.
Apart from composing all the early James Bond film scores (circa: Connery), he also wrote the scores for films such as Born Free, The Knack, King Rat and Seance On a Wet Afternoon.
Essentially British, his music conjures up images of Britain being cool and sophisticated. Lush strings follow funky hammond keyboards and Stan Kenton-esque horns.

But sadly his music falls on deaf ears as British faces stare out miserably from their council estate windows upon the slate gray nothingness of 'Good Old England' and the sound of church bells is muffled by car alarms screaming 'Let me Out, Let Me Out, Let Me Out'..... |

Those who know Robbie Williams 'Millenium' will have heard the string part sampled from You only live twice, a John Barry masterpiece.
I have been unable to download ANY of his music [other then the Bond theme] on Soulseek. I was bought Themeology years ago for xmas, and wish I had it with me now. I especially love the music to Midnight Cowboy. |

Midnight Cowboy is a masterpiece. Who would combine a harmonica with a full string section?
I have the theme from You Only Live Twice. Plus all the other 'remake' themes used in the film.
I love the way he combines instruments that (at the time) were never used together.
