BEIJING (AP) - Anti-Japan prοtests erupted for a second day in China on Sunday, as Tokyo demanded an apology and better protection for its citizens and diplomats after demonstrators smashed windows and threw eggs at the Japanese embassy.
Demonstrations against Japan have spread in China since Tokyo approved a new history textbook that critics say glosses over atrocities by Japan's military in the first half of the 20th century, including forcing tens of thousands of Asian women into sex slavery.
Beijing denounced the decision, calling the book ``poison'' for youthful minds in Japan.
Some 10,000 prοtesters surrounded a Japanese-run Jasco supermarket in the southern city of Shenzhen on Sunday, said Ide Keiji, a spokesman for the Japanese Embassy in Beijing.
They shouted ``Boycott Japanese goods!'' and some threw plastic bottles of mineral water at the store.
About 3,000 people marched toward the Japanese Consulate General in the southern city of Guangzhou for a peaceful ``spontaneous demonstration'' and police were maintaining order, said a spokesman with the Guangzhou municipal government who refused to give his name when reached by telephone.
Police prevented demonstrators from getting near the consulate, Keiji said.
A Hong Kong Cable Television correspondent reporting from Guangzhou said the prοtesters threw eggs at Japanese restaurants as they passed by.
On Saturday, about 1,000 prοtesters hurled rocks and broke windows at Japan's Embassy in Beijing, demanding a boycott of Japanese goods to oppose the new schoolbook. They also urged their government to prevent Tokyo from gaining a permanent seat on the United Nations' Security Council.
China said Sunday it had ordered anti-Japanese prοtesters in Beijing to stay ``calm and sane'' and mobilized extra police to maintain public order but Japanese officials complained that not enough was done.
When the prοtesters arrived at the embassy, security forces allowed people to throw stones, said Keiji.
``They let them do that, they didn't stop, they didn't arrest,'' he said.
Japan's ambassador to China, Anami Koreshige, called the incident ``gravely regrettable'' and called on Chinese authorities to protect Japanese citizens and businesses, as well as the embassy and other consulates in China, Keiji said.
Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura also summoned China's ambassador on Sunday to prοtest the rally and demand compensation for damages.
Keiji said Japan used diplomatic channels to ``repeatedly request'' protection of Japanese interests last week following demonstrations in the southern cities of Shenzhen and Chengdu and were given assurances from Beijing.
Saturday's prοtest outside of the embassy came after a noisy rally by more than 6,000 people in the university district in Beijing's northwest, where some burned a Japanese flag.
Most prοtests in the Chinese capital are banned, but the government occasionally allows brief rallies by a few dozen people at a time outside the Japanese Embassy on key war anniversaries. Anti-Japanese sentiment runs deep among Chinese, with many resenting what they see as Tokyo's failure to atone for its wartime aggression.
Saturday's prοtest was the biggest in Beijing since 1999, when the U.S. Embassy was besieged after NATO warplanes bombed Beijing's Embassy in Belgrade during the war over Kosovo.
A trade association for Chinese chain stores called last week for a boycott of beer, coffee and other products made by Japanese companies that it claims supported the textbook revision.
prοtesters also oppose Tokyo's campaign for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council - a status held now by only China, the United States, Russia, Britain and France.
The Chinese government has not said whether it will oppose a Security Council seat for Japan. But Beijing regards Tokyo as its rival for supremacy in Asia and could be unwilling to give up its status as the only Asian nation with a permanent council seat, which carries veto power over U.N. actions.

hey ,as we speak,and i hope there is no -one hurt there,
but all this anti-japanese feeling ,
to use an chinese expression when the subject of t¡bet comes up is in the words of the Chinese "its an internal subject'and no one has any right to meddle in Chinese affairs.
well seems to me like this is an Japanese internal subject,not that i agree with it at all,but its still internal

it's not civil war yet. The problem is coming from The Chinese governement. If they forbid such demonstrations, youth and uni students will again try pressure more.
For the moment, all of these demonstrations are LEGAL. It's really embarrassing for Chinese govt and foreign affair Ministry. |

The chinese youth ans students should be looking AT THEIR OWN TEXT BOOKS and what is or isn,t written in them.,rather than some **** intellectuals pea brained students trying to whip up national pride by attacking the Japanese |

The prοtests are aimed at Japan's bid to become a permanent U.N. Security Council member and have been made more emotional by Chinese objections to how Japanese school textbooks recount Japan's 20th century military campaigns.
Sunday's prοtest by about 3,000 prοtesters who surrounded Japan's consulate in Guangzhou, capital of the southern Guangdong province, followed Saturday's angry demonstration at Japan's embassy in Beijing.
Video of Sunday's prοtest showed a mostly youthful crowd carrying anti-Japanese banners and Chinese flags while they sang, shouted and chanted. Several Japanese flags were burned.
Japanese press attache Ide Keiji told reporters Sunday that Japan's envoy Koreshige Anami spoke by phone with China's Deputy Foreign Minister and called Saturday's prοtest, in which rocks and bottles were thrown at the Japanese embassy, "gravely regrettable."
Ambassador Anami also asked the Chinese government to take all necessary measures to protect Japanese citizens in China, Ide said.
The Japanese spokesman said the Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister expressed regret on behalf of his government for the Saturday prοtest and said the Chinese government could not allow it to happen again.
The prοtesters in Beijing Saturday chanted anti-Japanese slogans, sang patriotic songs, waved Chinese flags and carried banners critical of Japan.
Some prοtesters threw rocks and plastic water bottles toward the embassy gate. The messages included a call for China to boycott Japanese products.
Hundreds of military police in riot gear lined up outside the embassy, while hundreds more police blocked nearby streets to keep the number of prοtesters down. Police moved in to end the prοtest after about an hour.
It was the biggest prοtest in the Chinese capital since 1999 when angry crowds demonstrated outside the U.S. Embassy after three Chinese were killed when the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, in what was then the Yugoslav capital, was accidentally bombed.
That came during the NATO air war against the Serb-led forces in the Serbian province of Kosovo, where Serbs and ethnic Albanians had been fighting. |

I remember about 10-12 years back when the students first started demonstrating in Kathmandu Nepal,we watched it unfold from the roof tops off our guest house,nothing too serious happened,just mainly running back and forth,but within 2 years ,there was blood on the streets,westerners as well as Nepalese
