Post subject: Medical examination for foreigners

I have been offered a job teaching English in Shanghai. My employer says I need to obtain a medical before I arrive in Shanghai. Is it true the ruling has changed about needing to get a medical before arriving? I don't want to waste time and money and then have to get another medical.

We did the health check back home, but when we are here, the gov need some more specific item to be checked, so we had to get another one. make sure u r healthy in general, otherwise u will be refused to get residency visa.

the 'z' work visa and the health screening is done here in shanghai, and the chinese immigration dept. will not accept any other from overseas. so whether you have a medical checkup anywhere else then you will have to have it repeated here regardless. the health check is a requirement for getting a 'z' visa.

I would recomend getting one at home so you can ask all about vaccinations and such - I beleive you need this health certificate to keep in your passport, or at least that's what we were told. I keep that little yellow folded piece of paper in my passport with my US doctor's stamp next to the different vaccinations I had done (i.e. hepatitus, yellow fever.)

Then we also had the medical check up here which was the most bizarre experience I ever had. We were hooked up to all sorts of crazy devices I had never had done in the states. Then we got these very detailed reports (mostly in CHinese!) that did manage to discover I had some abnormaility with my nasal cavity or something minor like that. Still, no medical exam in the States had ever discovered such a thing, so all in all, it was kinda interesting, good to know these things! My husband learned for the first time in his life he had some sort of calicification near his lungs. We were impressed that for all the pricey and fancy doctors we've had at home, only the CHinese were able to determine such specific little medical conditions in us!

yes Z visa but everything had to be the original report (original ECG strip, radiograph, bloodwork etc)- copies were not accepted

I'd check with your employer again - I'm guessing it may be a miscommunication with the term "medical check". My guess is that they want to make sure the teacher they bring from overseas is healthy. In this case just a regular, signed check-up from your family doctor is necessary and a good time to check for/get necessary vaccinations. Most common practise is to have a medical check done here to obtain your work visa at your employer's expense.

As for bizarre medical reports - I supposedly have "arythmia of the heart" - go figure as they unannouncedly pulled up my shirt to hook up the EKG machine in front of 15 gawking Chinese...

yes, and at the Medical Exam for Foreigners my friend was told he only had only ONE kidney!

I wouldn't place too much importance on what they tell you.
