| Post subject: Diving lessons |
Howdy! I'm heading to Australia next month on vacation and was wondering if there is a place to get my level 1 diving certificate here in Shanghai. I would rather get my certificate here so that I can begin immediately when I get to Cairns, instead of having to waste valuable vacation time taking lessons there.
Thanks! |

Shanghai Aquarium.
Google for more info.
But the idea of taking classes and first dives in a pool sounds gloomy to me. First level; cant you do it in 3-4 days in Cairns? Striaght in the Ocean?

I would suggest doing all the coursework here if you can and then doing the open water dives once you are on the reef... |

Shanghai Aquarium? Wow, I'd never thought you'd be able to take diving lessons in Shanghai. What are the rates like, would you know? |

I was interested also and got the following information :
"Dive with the sharks. For regular diving in Shanghai we have the thrilling dive with the sharks RMB600/pax, an exciting scuba dive experience for beginners to experienced divers in our 2.2 million litre oceanarium led by our friendly dive masters. Close proximity to 3 metre sharks from 6 different species (Grey nurse, Nurse, White tips, Black tips, Leopard and Cat sharks), rays, sea turtles and many more marine life in excellent visibility and 24C water temperature all year round. We provide all scuba equipment (Scubapro brand) and facilities and a certificate recording your memorable dive experience. "
"Dive Club Membership RMB850. For just RMB250 more than the dive with the sharks or swim with the whales you can join the dive club for the whole year, entitling members to the following privileges:
- Unlimited free admission to the aquarium and whale stadium for one year;
- All guests accompanying members receive 20% discount on admission to the aquarium and whale stadium ;
- Members and their accompanying guests receive 40% discount on the subsonic adventure rides;
- A free dive with the sharks or swim with the whales, and subsequent dives with the sharks and swim with the whales at half price;
- Organise regular dive trips to Philippines, Thailand and Thousand Island Lake, Hangzhou;
- Your personalised membership card.
3. Learn to Scuba Dive Certification Courses RMB2,800.
We can offer the classroom theory, quizzes and confined water sessions of the PADI Open Water Diver and for the CMAS diver course we offer classroom, confined water and open water session for certification. The PADI course is called the PADI Open Water Diver Referral course as PADI requires 4 open water sessions and due to the lack of suitable open water venues in and around Shanghai our instructor signs off the PADI Open Water Diver Referral form after completion of the classroom theory, quizzes and swimming pool sessions done in Shanghai. This PADI Open Water Referral form is recognised by any PADI dive resort for the completion of the open water dives for certification. A scuba dive training course can start anytime with groups of at least 3pax made up from our waiting list. The course fee is RMB2,800/pax and includes the use of all dive equipment, training material, professional instruction, transport to and from aquarium and swimming pool venues."
It is about all info I have. |

That depends completely on what you want, and if you are taking a course package. You can email them for the latest info, I have not been there for 3 years now. Be careful when you are only going for a weekend with flying after multiple dives. |

Agree with Andreas here, Hainan was ok for wife and I during CNY, but then again you can't do much in a afternoon...specially for amatures.
Heard Malaysia is something awesome for diving... |

Malaysia is great. But also Vietnam (Da Nang and Cam Ranh), and the Philippines (Cebu, Puerto Galera). You can check out the PADI facilities on www.padi.com and also sometimes find peoples recommendations and shared logged dives on that site. |

if it was up to me. i'd be much happier learning how to dive off a bona fide aussie than a chinese dude in a big tank with sharks.. but then again, i am biased, being australian n all.
i've heard the debate a million times, it all came down to "SAFETY". from what i've heard, the safety standards between the two countries are miles apart. it's safey and assuarance under tons of liters of water VS price (it is a lot cheaper in asia) and not wasting a few days in aust (which i can understand ) |
